Title: Lost Hostname After Restart
Post by: massonal on September 13, 2014, 01:33:21 PM
I have a Terrastation HD-H1.0.TGL/R5 running firmware version 2.16.  Every time I shutdown and restart the device it loses it's Hostname and it defaults back to HD-H1.0.TGL/R5.  I have to go to the setup screen to reset it every time...after which it is ok until I restart the NAS again.  Is there a battery in the station that has died perhaps?  It's been doing this for a couple years now (device is appro 5 years old).  Any ideas appreciated

Could be a firmware issue. I would download the latest firmware or if you are on the latest firmware, redownload and install it. Make sure your not doing this wirelessly, you need to be connected physically. I would also do a factory restore, This shouldnt erase the data just the settings. There should be 2 options one to delete data and one to reset settings. pick the right one or no more data lol. then do the update after its done. You might need to do a force update since there the same firmware.

To be clear, I lose my host-name when the Terastation is powered down (or loses power).  When it restarts it fills in the Host name with a different name "HD-HTGL884".  My Terastation is running the latest firmware version 2.16 (I recently flashed it again -- I was previously running version 1.x).  I have to go to the basic tab and rename it to the correct Host Name every time after I power down/up...and then it's fine until the next power-down.

If anything sounds like a firmware issue like i stated before. If you have tired installing the firmware with the force update setups and that didnt work then you either dont turn it off to keep the settings or roll back a firmware version. http://www.buffalotech.com/support-and-downloads/download/TS-HTGL_1.35_1.39.zip, i dont know what changes were made in the 2.16 as i cant find the changelog but if any of the issues that were fix weren't affecting you, I wouldn't of updated (if it isnt broken then dont fix it). Most of the time updates can bring issues that are either annoying or painful, this applies everything in life lol not just the Buffalo TeraStation. There wont be much any one can do if it is really a firmware issue as the unit was discontinued a long time ago.

This Terastation ran fine without this problem for 3-4 years, then about a year ago the problem started.  At the time I was running the original firmware version (1.07) and I had never upgraded.  A few months ago I upgraded the firmware to Version 2.16 -- thinking perhaps that would solve the problem, but the problem persists.  When I power down and power up, all settings are retained except for the Host Name.  Not sure if this additional detail helps...but the problem wasn't originally caused by a firmware upgrade and the latest firmware upgrade I've tried hasn't resolved it.

O... that was much more helpful.. well this would be a new issue to me but coming from a understanding of cmos and bios, i can only assume that if the unit has a battery then that is your problem if not the the some part of the unit is not working properly to store the info. This would be the only 2 ideas i have. Usually any kind of settings not being kept saved has to do with one of those 2. I know the second suggestion is board. Cant say if they have a cmos chip or what. Dont have this unit so i cant mess with it.

OK... Thanks so much for your ideas.  I've looked at the board many times, but don't see an obvious battery -- that was my first idea about a year ago.  I can only assume there is some kind of CMOS or motherboard chip failure.  I think I'll just live with the problem, since it's easy to "fix" when I power up -- just a nuisance.  Would love it if someone from Buffalo could comment.
