Hi,
I just bought a LinkStation-220. It is connected to my internet Box via ethernet, and accessible from my to laptops through wifi. My laptops are running Windows 7 and Windows 8.
What I am trying to do is configuring a folder with restricted access, and enable webaccess on it with the same rights.
The problem is, when I try to connect the folder from the laptop running Win8, it asks for authentication (although I gave access to this folder to this specific user). I use Windows Workgroup to configure users.
If, when prompted, I try to connect with another configured user, it still refuses the access. On Win7, I don't have any problem and can connect with all configured accounts.
Might be a newbie question, but what's wrong ?
Thanks
Hello Oprami,
When there wasn't any folder restrictions on, were you able to access the folder fine on windows 8? if you were then you need to delete the current credential key in windows 8. That might be causing the problem. Or it could be a firewall issue or the ntlm settings. that I have see once but never the less.
So to delete the key in your computer go to start and type "Credential Manager", you will see an option under settings on the right. select that and then click on credential manager, you will then either see the ip of the linkstation or the name showing under "Web Passwords", you can delete it, then try to connect and make sure you type the user name and then password and select save.
if there was nothing there, try with the firewall off and see what happens.
If that didn't help you can try this:
http://buffalotech.com/support-and-downloads/download/lmclchg-113.zip
This file will lower the file sharing security level, there should be a exe file with a orange square. try this. it will either allow you to lower the setting or it will say something about it already lowered... haven't use this file in a long time.
Thanks Joma,
Yes, with no restriction, I can access the folder. So I looked in the credential manager, but there is nothing here about the linkstation.
I did not find anything relevant concerning the firewall.
I finally tried the file, but there is no improvement.
I also had problems accessing, from win8, folders shared from win7, until both computers join a Windows HomeGroup, as if being in the same workgroup wasn't enough. Maybe is it related, as the linkstation can't be in a homegroup ...
Well the linkstation cant join a homegroup. that function doesnt exist in the linkstation. You have what you call workgroup which is best explained here http://compnetworking.about.com/cs/design/g/bldef_workgroup.htm,
The linkstation does have that option as 99% of computers do and is needed most of the time. Anyways there shouldn't be a issue with homegroup and the linkstation. I have 3 windows 7 and 1 windows 8 and 1 windows 8.1 and they have no issues with them being in a home group, Hmm.... question what do you mean you used the workgroup to configure the users?????
For example if you use the name of the computer account on a computer and enter that as a user in the linkstation and then went to the folder and added the used to the folder restrictions. right?
your following this steps from the manual right?

Yes, I know that homegroup is not supported by the linkstation, but I was wondering how it can interfer, as I have issue sharing folders between my win7 and win8 if both computers don't join the homegroup. I think I would probably solve the NAS-access problem by solving this windows sharing issue.
By saying I used the workgroup to configure the users, I meant that I'm using the windows accounts as user of the linkstation (same user, same password).
What I just tried is to delete the user corresponding to the win7 computer.
After that, when I try to access \\<IP of the linkstation>, windows ask me to authenticate. I used the win8 account and it worked fine. (But I didn't noticed before that you had to have a user on the linkstation to access the root?). Then, going on a restricted folder just works fine, as I am authenticated with the win8 user.
However, on the win8 computer, when I try to access \\<IP of the linkstation>, windows doesn't ask any authentication. (As it asks on win7, I guess it means that the configuration of the NAS user corresponding to the win8 computer is fine ?). But, when accessing a restricted folder (authorized for this specific user, of course), it re-asks for authentication. (Also, it does not work if I try to authenticate with the win7 user).
I also tried to create a third user, not known from any of the computer. When it asks for authentication, and I use this third username, it works on win7 but not win8 ...
