This is a Linkstation Pro, firmware is current. Windows 7 workgroup, 2 people sharing files on the Buffalo, mainly Word files. The user accidentally drug a folder into the Trash on the Buffalo. They are using a mapped drive, recycle bin is turned on. Then someone else copied that folder from the Trash back to the original location. In both the trash and original location there are some files that are Word temp files - ~$filename.doc for example, this is normal. But there are also Copy #1 of ~$filename.doc, Copy #2 of.... depending on how many times the document was edited (I guess). All these files are 1k and can't be opened. There are also hidden .TMP files like AE331985.TMP these appear to be the actual original document but without changes. In some cases the real .doc file is there but not always.
I've talked to support and apparently they know of the issue but could not explain it nor could tell me why it's not acting like one would expect a recycle bin/trash bin to act. Yes, we have a backup but the person in charge of it now says it's not been working all the time and we have yet to figure out whether the backup can be recovered. This is a 2 person shop, using Retrospect to backup to USB drives which is another story.
I'm wondering if anyone else has encountered this and are there tools available that might recover these files in their correct format and with changes? I have looked at my Buffalo and for Word files and Quickbooks files they are also not in their "normal" format. This makes the option to turn on recycle bin on the Buffalo completely useless for those file types. Other files that are downloads for example appear to be in their normal format in the trash.
I've escalated the support call, I understand we may have to manually go thru these files and recover if we can't recover from backup but I would like an explanation as to how the trash is supposed to work, if it doesn't work in certain scenarios is there some documentation that talks about this? I have yet to find anything. What is the trash for if not to be able to restore accidentally deleted files?
