So far i am dissapointed with the lack of quality in this device beyond beleif, sure i paid $80 for it, but still, the price is not the issue, it is the fact that out of the box this device is a paper weight.
With having to do a hack job on Buffalo's own updater to get the device to update because it wont' even start out of the box is ridiculous.
So now my problem is after getting past that step is it refuses to format my 3TB drive or even install the software from the disk provided. (i got NAV2 install and used the updater already)
I am in I.T, a System Admin, so i like to think i can solve most problems but this system has me ready to toss it against a wall due to its inability to "just work". I don't come home to fix problem from a company that should have a large enough team working on their products to assure they work as advertised %100 of the time.
/rant
Anyways i come here to ask for possible assistance from people who may have had these problems in just getting 1 single drive working which i have connected in Disk 1 slot.
Is there a setting somewhere that marks the drive as read only i am missing once the firmware is installed (because buffalo is too cheap to run the firmware from the device and has to use the drive in some way it seems so it locks it as read only?)
What i have done already reading over many threads
1. Removed the drive and put it in windows and used disk part / clean option - no difference
2. Tried a brand new, never used, still sealed hard drive - no difference
3. Tried with an SSD drive - no difference
All help is greatly appreciated.

Sadly, the following is per my own experience with my LS421DE, as well as one a friend got (mine through Newegg, his through eBay) after HOURS of fiddling (reformatting, diskpart cleaning, manual partition creation on a Linux Live system).
This unit will NOT, I repeat NOT, allow you to do the initial setup with a SINGLE drive, you MUST use DUAL drives for the initial setup!
You CAN set the unit up with 2 drives, then BREAK the RAID, and then remove disk 2 after its switched to JBOD mode (what deleting the RAID Array does), but sadly not before!
Hope this helps!
*Managed to snag a deal off Craigslist for 2x Seagate 2TB 7200RPM drives with 2 years of warranty left for $50 when they where selling for $90 (the specific model), not looking back, it runs like a champ in RAID 1!
Appreciate the input.
I did toy around with a 2nd drive, an SSD i had here just to see if i could install on that and then format the 3TB drive.
In the end after numerous re-flashes / updates with their own broken updater and modified ini file, numerous disk part / clean's the system seemed to do what it was supposed to do hours before and out of the box
I installed only the 3TB drive, booted the box and i got the proper white and red lights on front, from there i pressed the function button and after a while the box was accessible, the 3TB was formatted and it was actually working.
Finally had some relief i may not have to return this after all.
This has left one bad taste in my mouth, well that and this device can not get over 60MB's (more like 52-53Mb/s) unlike their fake claim of 80Mb/s speeds being possible.
I am doing more testing with direct configs to my system to test this using SSD's single and raid 0 and if i can not get 80Mb/s at any point in time, Buffalo will be getting a nice letter from me about false advertising and asking for information on how they obtained these false claims of speed....
@Mathiau: thank you for your topic, so I found my problem here after searching endless (thank you buffalo)...
@Net7 thank you for your solution.
my problem was the same:
I was not able to initialize 1 WD Red 3 TB in Slot 1, according to your tip I have added one 80 GB Seagte in Slot 2 and started the "LSUpdater" in EM-Mode after pushing the funktion button (red light blinking fast, waiting a little before starting LSUpdater).
Then I deleted the RAID-Array, shut down the LS421de removed the Seagate, started the LS421de again ... then shock: red blinking again, but a "check" of the HDD in Slot 1 (within the webinterface) resolved this problem and the on 3 TB WD is fully functional ...
Thank you so much!
