I'm after some advice please as I'm unsure which is the best product to buy.
I initially wanted to buy the single drive LinkStation LS410 but thought for a bit more money I could get the LinkStation LS421e and have a RAID setup.
Its just for home use. initially to back up via Time Machine of work etc from my Mac - but also like the idea of using it for Cloud, PS3 Media Centre, image and movie storage and access to from anywhere.
Q: Instead of getting the LS410 - would it work if I buy the LinkStation 421e with just the one drive for now... with a mind to buy another drive at a later date to use as RAID? Any problems doing this?
Q: Will WD Green drives be ok instead of the WD Red drives?
Q: Or should I just get the 410?
Many thanks
Jay
(different one!)
Also - when I later add another drive to start using as a RAID 1 - would I need to format the old drive with existing files on?
Yes it will work with one HDD and you can add a second HDD and create a raid at the later date.
Thanks Davo - When I add another drive to create a RAID 1, would I need to backup the original drive, and format both that one and the new drive together?

You will have to teach me the magic you used to get this to work! I had 2 LS421DE units that would NOT format the data partition (using button or using forced firmware with rebuild partition option selected, gives the read only error when you try to format it) when only 1 drive was used... tried 500GB/1TB/2TB/3TB WD/Seagate, different model's and all, eh no workie for me!
Then again, I got my unit a bit before the v1.31 was released and was using that file to do the install, so if it worked in one of the previous versions, it wouldn't surprise me!
Thanks Net7, hopefully the latest firmware will let this work.
OK - All setup and has the new firmware and works great.
...Except the webaccess. I know, same old story... i've read it many times on here.
I think i've set up port forwarding correctly ie its always on 192.168.0.3 and using port 1 and sent to 8080.
I've not requested a static IP address from my ISP - they don't supply this service! Is this the only way to get webaccess or is there a war around it ie http://www.noip.com/ ?
many thanks
Port 8080 is usually for http access, set the web access ports (both internal and external) to 9000 and then forward this port on your router.
ok cool thanks... what about the the static IP address issue? Do I not need this?
If possible I always use static IPs but I reserve the IP address of the device via the router.
Forgive me, but I'm not completely sure I understand whats needed here... so your saying I don't necessarily need a static IP address and can stick with a dynamic IP - but keep the NAS on 192.168.0.3?
Are you able to give a link to a step by step way to set this up on a router? Again, I'm sorry to ask but I'm a graphic designer and don't tend to deal with anything server side :(
many thanks
Whoop! All sorted. I now have webaccess working. I had to 'enable' the 'Exclusive Session' and it now works. I'd not read anywhere where it said this needed to be enabled.
Many thanks for all your help davo.
