I need to change the MTU size on my LS-CHL linkstation live to 1492 in order to match max frame size supported on my DSL connection.

Is there a way to change the MTU value other than 1500 or jumbo frame ?

Usually MTU size's would be changd on your router. The only thing close to that would be the Ethernet frame size which you mentioned.

The MTU limit of 1492 depends on the DSL link (tipically PPPoA), not on the router configuration.

If you use bigger MTU, the IP packets need to be fragmented with loss of performance.

I've tried to issue the command (via telnet) on the Linkstation: "ifconfig eth0 mtu 1492" but the interface still reports MTU 1500...

There is no option for a manual Ethernet frame size. 1500 would be your only option at that point.

The protocols involved with the internet fully support packet fragmentation... packets are routinely fragmented across the internet, since different WAN links support different MTU sizes. As the NAS devices only support IP/Ethernet connection (not PPPoE or PPPoA), there is no option to use MTU sizes that aren't standard for Ethernet links.

The device was never designed to show changes made inside the OS, such as the command you issued. That most likely changed the MTU (at least until you rebooted it), but the change is not reflected in the interface because that MTU was never designed to be used. Per our forum guidelines, please refrain from discussing modifications to the firmware, since that obviously voids the warranty.
