Title: Problems Connecting to LinkStation Pro Duo
Post by: tjavery on April 25, 2009, 08:02:30 AM

I just got a LinkStation Pro Duo (LS-WTGL/R1). Had no troubles at all installing it initially (once I figured out that I had to reconfigure my AVG Antivirus Firewall to behave for a home network and not a stand alone computer).

I'm running Windows XP Home. My machine is plugged into a DSL router. The NAS drive is also plugged into the same DSL router.

Once I made it through the initial installation (using the CD that came with the NAS), the drive was accessible and listed under "Network Drives" when looking at the "My Computer" folder. I could click on it, open it, and read and write to it.

I then got into the web interface and changed the configuration to Raid 1. After the initial raid setup was complete (before the long, 4~5 hour disk check), the interface prompted me to create a shared folder. I did this and named it "Archive". (not sure what I was doing, but I went along with it anyway :)

Now, after the long disk check is complete, I can NO longer access the drive via "Network Drives" (when looking at the "My Computer" folder). It's listed there, but states, "Disconnected Network Drive".

I have no clue how to reconnect to the drive. I've tried rebooting both my computer and the NAS box. I've dug through the NAS' web interface looking for something that would reconnect, but could find nothing. I initialized the NAS by powering down, and the powering up while holding the function button and then pressing it again after it turned on. Still, it's disconnected according to my computer.

HOWEVER, the "Archive" shared folder I created is accessible in "My Network Places". I can see the folder and read and write to it. I did a test download of about 100 MB of data, and it wrote to the drive no problemo.

So, do I need to worry about connecting the apparently "disconnected" network drive, or should I continue to access the NAS via the one shared folder, "Archive"?

Right click on the drive letter, and choose Disconnect. Then you can map the drive again.

Great, thanks! It worked! I appreciate your help. Now, I have the thing mapped again, but it's only mapped to the "Archive" shared folder that I created. Is this how it's supposed to work? I was thinking that I'd have access to the NAS pretty much like a secondary hard drive. I.e. I'd see L:\ (e.g. drive letter) and then be able to open it at a "base" level. The way it's set up now, I'm accessing only that folder (i.e. L:\Archive). But I don't "see" it that way - I just see L:\ (and when I read/write, it's actually accessing L:\Archive). Not a problem, but I just want to make sure that's a proper way to set it up. Thanks!

Yes, that's correct. You map a shared folder, not the root of the drive. If you have multiple shares that you want to access, map them as well.
