O.K., so I guess at this point I've figured out that the security settings for a files and folders are about as primitive as can be and I have to say that's awfully disappointing for a device that portends to be a business-class NAS.
I'm glad we can sort of connect it to Active Directory but not being able to set permissions on subfolders or even having any real granularity in the permissions at the share level is almost inexcusable.
Please tell me that there is a major firmware upgrade in the works that will resolve these issues? I really like the device, but just have to hesitate to recommend it to my business clients anymore unless I can assure them that they can do something as simple as mark a folder "Read-only" to a certain group of users.

Sorry, but this has been the standard complaint for a long time and I'm sorry to say this device cannot be administered by AD. AD is an ability so the device can join the domain and pull the users and groups. Thus, you can set permissions on the root level of the folder structure but nay on the subfolders. Terribly sorry but you're not the first person I've had to tell this to, but I do know that the iSCSI devices that we have can act more to suit your needs.
I'd even be o.k. with it not being administered from the AD if we could just set some level of permissions on subfolders.
As it is we have to kludge around it by breaking everything off into separate shares and such.
I'll take a look at the iSCSI products, but I have to be honest that we're starting to evaluate other brands of NAS devices. Which pains me because I really do like the Buffalo devices (I have 1.5TB Terastation Live at my feet under my desk right now in fact).
<sigh>
