Title: FTP and local ...
Post by: falmaleh on April 22, 2009, 03:29:36 AM

Hello,

I connect to LinkStation Mini from office with FTP and IE6. It works fine but I can't see some directories in folders, although at home, the direct connexion from my iMac to LS (SMB) gives me all the directories of all folders.

I don't understand why (in FTP and SMB, I use my admin id and password) I can't see somes directories. Very strange.

Any idea ?

Regards,
Francois

Check in the folder setup if there is a tic for FTP. Don't use IE. The IE logs on as anonymous and usually ignores all attempts to log in as a user. So you don't see folders because there is none you have permission for. [it's the way it is- you only see folders you can access] Use Firefox or Opera. Try ftp://[user]@[IP or DNS name] I would recommend not to use the admin for FTP access. Create other users in the UI. Assign them to the folders you want.

FTP is checked, and I can see most of directories... except some folders.

I tried to connect with IE, Firefox and Safari : it's the same. With ftp://xxx:xxx@IP, I have some "holes", and with SMB, all work fine.

It's strange some files/folders don't appear in a browser with ftp.

Your name indicates you are french. Avoid all special characters in file and folder names.

The problem is: If you upload something containing special characters with SMB > fine with SMB but special characters cause a mess in FTP

Same the way around: If you upload  something containing special characters with FTP> fine with FTP but special characters cause a mess in SMB

Also make sure you have something appropriate for Windows client language in the basic settings. (like CP850) If you have already important data on it don't change this one without having a backup. In my expierience sometimes data disappear.

Hope it helps.

the main folder name where I found the problem is "Sites Web" (without quotes of course), so any french particularity in the name.

So rename it to sites-web ; no space if possible. This is a sub folder, right? What is the current setting for Windows client language?

If I remember correctly the syntax in a web browser for a space is "%20" minus quotes of course. You could try that if worse comes to worse.

Thanks, but in fact two things :

- with SMB *and* buffalonas.com : no problem

- with FTP, some directories don't display and a lot of them contain spaces and I can see them

- the browser is not the cause of this problem

IT IS NOT that I don't understand what you say. But it is not easy to encircle a problem what is not always the same. The FTP server and the SMB server are SEPARATE SERVICES and considering this background it does not necessary always to say "it works in SMB" That's understood.

So again

* If you read my SMB-FTP post- could it be that only folders uploaded via SMB are affected?

* Does it make a difference if you remove spaces? Please try with 3 folders. I understand that you can see some with spaces in the name. Please try anyway.

* Sofar as you know- did you change any settings  before you created the in FTP invisible folders or could it be they became invisible after you changed somethin and only new folders are visible in FTP?

* Firmware?

* setting for Windows client language in basic settings?

* Did you ever do a firmware upgrade?

* Did you ever a reset via firmware?

If you always ignore my posts and my questions we will never make progress.
