Title: Adding bigger hard drives to Linkstation
Post by: jbedsted on January 24, 2014, 03:05:58 PM
I have a Linkstation LS-Q2.0TL/R5. I decided to upgrade all 4 drives from 500GB Drives to 2TB drives. I realized that one original drive must be in bay 1 because all of the settings are on it. So I have one original drive in bay 1 and the other 3 have 2TB each and I was able to format the new drives and put it in a RAID5. Is there a way to replace that original drive as well and keep the settings so that I have 8TB total? I know Buffalo doesn't officially support replacing the drives.

Also I'm a little hazy on how RAID works. I want to have a RAID5 and I assume the maximum I can get out of my current config is 1374.5GB because I rebuilt the RAID5 with having the one 500GB and 3 2TB drives. I could only get that much when I had 4 500GB drives in RAID5. I am Assuming all 4 drives must be the same to utilize the full potential.

So do this.. make sure you delete the raid. You need to have all 4 drives are not in a raid. Each drive will be individual. Then format the last 3 so we know there clean. Now turn off the unit and then move the drives up a slot. so hdd4 to hdd3 ect. You should have no drive in slot 4 now. Now you add the other drive that you haven't used and turn on the unit. The unit should boot up fine and then you can format the 4th drive and then create a raid.  Dont delete nothing on the original drive 1 yet. Not till you get the unit to work as it is your safeguard.
