Title: Terastation 5400 diskless newbie questions
Post by: abducted on January 12, 2014, 05:31:59 AM
Hi, I'm completely new to NAS, and I would appreciate some help

I have brought a second-hand diskless Terastation 5400 - ts5400d0804
I'm having trouble installing the device, as I'm not sure what it expects

What I have tried so far:

1)
using the 2 1GB NTFS-formatted HDDs from my PC
result:
boot failure, siren, everything in red

2)
using a 120 GB drive with a 30 GB partition formatted to FAT32
result:
boot error posted on the screen of the hooked up monitor, cmd-line recovery interface appears

3)
using the 120 GB HDD with an Ubuntu installer
result:
this is what got me the furthest, I have managed boot from the pendrive and install Ubuntu on the disk
The installation is successful, and afterwards I can boot from the HDD
However the power button keeps on flashing, and I still cannot see the device in NAS Navigator or anywhere
It does get an IP address though from DCHP

So my question is, how do I properly install the device?
Which HDD should I have in which bay, how should it be formatted, partitioned?
Am I able to use NTFS disks with this device at all?

Thanks,

Im assuming you don't have a orginial drives since its a second hand unit right? if so Davo posted a link to the ts5400 image awhile back. you can use that to get the unit in em mode and then download the firmware and update the unit so you can get it working.

*note: firmware is the OS :)

Firmware download

If the unit didn't take the firmware update then try doing the update with the steps below.

Force Update Procedure (use steps for newest unit)
