Title: TS-XE4.0TL/R5 drive 2 (and some drive 1) failures
Post by: pgarrett on September 24, 2013, 10:06:16 AM
We have two TS-XE4.0Tl/R5 units in RAID5 configuration located in separate offices.  Over the past three months we have experienced three failures with the units.

First: On unit 1 Drive 2 was marked bad. Replaced the drive and let the array rebuild overnight. The rebuild was successful.

Second: (two weeks later) On unit 2 Drive 2 was marked bad. Replaced the drive and let the array rebuild overnight. Came in the next morning to find that the rebuild failed and that Drive 1 was now marked bad as well.  All data on the array was lost.

Third: Back to unit 1. Came in to find the unit in error mode.  Drive 1 and Drive 2 (again) were marked as bad. All data on the array was lost.

Drive 2 is a consistent failure across multiple units and Drive 1 is right behind it. This seems to be indicative of a hardware problem and not the drives themselves (too coincidental).  Is this a known problem with the TS-XE4.0 units and is there a fix?  Or....  (as I'm leaning towards doing) should I just hand these units over to the recycler?

edit: spelling

Ok then! Off to the recycle pile they go! (minus the drives, they all been reformatted and tested as good).
