Title: Has ANYONE gotten a USB drive to work with 421de?
Post by: MikeRubin on September 07, 2013, 12:38:01 PM
Several posts here document failures of the new 421de to recognize USB drives. In my own case, an HDD that I use with a Linkstation effortlessly won't mount at all on the new 421de, whether attached to the rear 2.0 or front 3.0, nor will any other USB drive or stick.  This is my second 421de and the two units' behaviors are identical.

Rather than ask again whether others have experienced the same behavior, I will ask it this way: Have any of you had success accessing USB drives on this device? Not talking about accessing one through the terminal; just talking about mounting it so that the USB drive tab in the GUI shows the drive is there. Thanks for the info, if you have had success.

Hi MikeRubin,

It's been weeks! No one seems to care about our problem!

I appreciate the screen shot.  I have the same questions as Wafer, as I am on my third 421de and each exhibits the same failure: It will recognize an unpowered thumb drive but not a powered drive. Internal disks are RAID1.  I can buy the Buffalo 4TB Drivestation if that would make a difference, despite the substantial premium over competitive brands, but, frankly, if the 421de observe USB standards, I should not need to buy any particular brand of external drive.  Any thoughts on what's up here?

Hi!

I too have just bought a LS-421DE and had much fun and games with a USB 1.5TB drive (Verbatim) which I wanted to use for backup.  This WAS recognized by the system when first installed and failed miserably to ever make a backup.  It wrote various amounts around 3.6 and 6.2GB of a 355GB RAID content and would be uncompleted 15 hours later.  (I tried reformatting to XFS then ext3 all with the same result, as if the drive goes to sleep and stops the backup)  I say "goes to sleep" because, in desperation I used the NovaBackup software which came with the NAS and that too stopped after 8.3GB and was the same an hour later.  When I browsed the USB share from NasNavigator2 I heard the drive spin-up and the NovaBackup recommenced transferring data the stopped after a furthe 7.5GB.

Ithought at first this was the USB HDD and tried to change it for a 1.5TB Intenso which is not recognised front or back USB port formatted as ext3, exFAT, NTFS or XFS in UBUNTU and windows (as appropriate).  I obviously can't format in the NAS as it is not recognised.

My previous NAS was a LS-250GL which worked flawlessly and lead to me buying this pig-in-a-poke.

Anyone at Buffalo listening?

Hi!

Just had another thought.  When I first installed the NAS I didn't connect to the network as I was already running my LS250GL for a network storage and I wanted to transfer the existing files to the LS421DE then back them up to the USB HDD.  This means that the USB drive was connected, recognised and used with the as supplied firmware (1.1 or the like, I didn't look!).

When I had transferred and got bored of the long wait for the backup to (not) happen, I decided to go live with the LS421DE (everyone else had gone to bed and it was an ideal time.  When I disconnected the old NAS from the network and plugged in the network cable to the new NAS I got the firmware update notification which I did in the morning following.  Maybe the old F/W worked for the USB and the new F/W (1.3) doesn't.

Just a thought.....
