Title: Windows 8 cannot see LS-421de on the network
Post by: rschoner on August 01, 2013, 04:37:01 PM
I have a new LS-421DE attached to a DLink wireless router. The router is cable connected to a Windows 7 machine. The Li-421DE can be seen by the Windows 7 machine and by a Windows 7 netbook over the wireless network. My Windows 8 machine cannot see the Linkstation over the wireless network but it can see the DLink router just fine. Any suggestions?

I guess I should have said "Windows 8 cannot MAP" the ls-421de drives. I can log on to the ls-421de using Navigator and can create folders etc. but I cannot map to the folders.

What error does it give you?

Hi,
It does not give an error since it can't see the drive there is nothing to map to. I tried forcing it by entering \\192.168.0.114\LS421DE9AF\Share; that gives a "Network Path Invalid" message.

Is this a default or imaged and possibly tweaked installation of windows 8? These definitely work with windows 8.

Install Nas Navigator, and when you right click on the TeraStation and hit 'view shares' what happens?

This is a new installation of Windows 8 on a new ssd drive. There is no "View Shares" option. "Map Shares"  Says "Create a Folder Named Share" although there is a "Share" folder on each drive. "Browse Shares" sayas "Could not open shared folder. The LS-421de is a new product for Buffalo in the Linkstation line.

I spent about 2-3 hours with Buffalo support. They took control of the machine and tried several things including an "escalation" to another tier. Since it works on my Windows 7 machine they decided it was a Windows 8 problem.

I signed up for paid Microsoft support. MS took control of both the Windows 7 and 8 machines. Again, after 2-3 hours the problem has been escalated and I am awaiting a call from Tire 2 support.

You said that these machines work with Windows 8; do you have direct experience with them?
Thanks for the interest.

Under file explorer, click the map network drive icon and you should be able to map the drives with no problem under Windows 8, see attached pic:

Spent about 2 hours with Microsoft tech support and things are working now. He said he had to enable netbios on the Win 8 machine. Once he did that Win 8 and Win 7 could share files and Win 8 could map the nas drives. Before that all I got was Access Denied when I tried to share folders or map to the nas. I asked if netbios was enabled by default in Windows 8 and he said no. It's a little troubling that I had to pay Microsoft to get Windows 8 to work with Windows 7 since thay are both currently supported.

That is very odd, we haven't seen that on default windows 8 builds, and would have seen it a lot more often as calls into support if it was defaulted off. Perhaps its a Win8 versioning issue - certainly you could unbind NetBIOS from the NIC but NetBIOS is -fundamental- to networking over UNC path names, without it you cant use the traditional \\server\share syntax to connect to shares.

"without it you cant use the traditional \\server\share syntax to connect to shares. "
That certainly describes what I was seeing.

From day 1 of the Windows 8 install I could not see the shared files on the Windows 7 machine. I worked around it using DVD's and a thumb drive to copy data so I didn't care. It wasn't until I installed the Buffalo drive that I was forced to address the problem. Quite frankly, I had almost forgotten about it and that's why it was not mentioned in earlier posts. I'm wondering if something was corrupted during the install and maybe I could have fixed it by a re-install/repair; but I'll never know.

Hmm, I've done a little more homework on this, it looks like some things might consider it a security risk and disable it... Did you install any antivirus or firewall software, or do any configuration to make it act as a server (web server, etc)?

You can also disable it from your DHCP server, but most people are using a router as a DHCP server these days.

AV on the Windows 8 machine is Microsoft Security Essentials and I did not disable it in the router.

One other thing since you're here. On the Windows 7 machine I can not create a folder using the NAS Software. The button looks active but clicking on it does nothing. I can create a folder on the Windows 8 machine using the NAS Software so it's not hampering me right now. I noticed on the Buffalo web site that there seems to be different versions of the software for Windows 7 and 8. I wonder if the Windows 7 software has a bug, although the software I installed on the Windows 7 machine came from the disk in the Buffalo box. I tried downloading software from the Buffalo site. It took a long time and did not install correctly so I went back to the software from the CD.

If you are talking about creating a share via the web admin page then clear the cache and cookies in your browser or use a different browser.
