Title: I12 error
Post by: FeelGoodWatches on July 24, 2013, 11:57:46 AM
This is a brand new LS420D that was put into service on Friday, July 19.  I ran one backup before I realized that the default setting was RAID0 and changed it to RAID1.  I've run a successful daily backup every day since then.  I started getting an I12, degraded mode, message on Monday.  I've emailed Buffalo Tech Support twice, with no response.  Any solutions from the user-base?  Am I looking at replacing one of the drives already?  Drives are 1 tb Toshiba.

Hard Drives do have a higher 'Infant Mortality' rate than they have failures in the 6months - 3 year of service period.

If you need immediate support, contact via phone. Wait times should not take long.

Expect 24-48 hours for an email response if that's how you contact, and check your spam filters.

These don't hot swap, but you should go look in the UI to see which drive failed or fell offline. Since you have a backup, I'd try rebuilding the mirror set and see what happens.

OK.  So, went into the interface and saw that drive 2 was degraded.  Clicked on the Rediscover tab and it did whatever it was going to do, then the display said that drive 2 was now unformatted.  I tried to re-format it, but it failed.  Should I even try a RAID rebuild at this point or is the drive toast?

You can try the rebuild. Keep running your backups if it comes back up. To be clear : If it caught on fire (and it won't but that's just an expression) you won't lose data?

Drive 1 seems to be working, so there's a backup there (I ass-ume) plus I run Carbonite.  I =hope= I'm backed up...  I'll try the rebuild.  FWIW, I've only received the "we've received your email" replies to the 2 separate support requests I've sent; one on Monday and one earlier today.  I can not find a phone number for support anywhere.

We get a lot of European and other regions' participation here, even though this is technically the North American forum (but we love having you guys here!!)

If you are in the US or Canada, you can find the number here (http://www.buffalotech.com/contact) over on the top left. The US has 24x7 US based support, and I'm in contact with them regularly, they are good guys.

OK.  So I tried reformatting drive 2 and it gave me an error message, then it said that the system couldn't contact the box.  The white light blinked for a while, then went back to the 1 long 2 short amber lights and a "Please wait" message.  The drive won't turn off by the switch in the back and I've now got an drive not mounted / unformatted message in Navigator.  Wait, the drive just shut down after using the hard switch; just took about a minute to cycle, I guess.

Talked to tech support and they agree that drive 2 is toast.  They won't replace the drive, but =will= send me a refurbished unit.  Right; fails after a week and I get a refurb?  Don't think so.  Going back to Staples for a new one.  Hope to have it by Friday.

If you bought it a week ago, should be a new replacement. Did you buy it awhile before putting it into service?
