I have an LS-CHL1.0TL-AP Linkstation that's nearly 5 years old, and still going. The manufacture date on the box is 27 Aug 2008, but I bought it at the store on 26 Aug 2009, and its been running pretty much non-stop since then as a network accessible archive for regular system backup files from 3 computers. The management interface pages via the browser are basically a light blue background. I've since updated it to Firmware v1.12 and the windows desktop NAS Navigator2 to v2.10 RC4.
I'm thinking of adding a further NAS to the LAN and the subject of software compatibility and management utilities arises.
I tried once to upgrade the LS firmware to ver 2.27 but it was a disaster and I was advised that 1.12 was the latest for that hardware . The download pages and release notes seem to indicate that for my series of Linkstation, there are no further firmware upgrades.
Question 1. please confirm that this series of device has no later firmware version.
Adding a further NAS to the LAN raises the question of compatibility for the desktop navigator.
Question 2. Is a later version of navigator compatible with the old series of device, or would 2 versions (existing and any new one) be necessary for management purposes?
Davidk
Answer to question 1: You already have the latest firmware
Answer to question 2: You should have no problem adding another NAS to your network, I have 2 Linkstations running on my network without any problems.
Thanks for the quick feedback.
The response to Q2 was not quite what I had in mind. Specifically, with 2 linkstations on the LAN (old and latest), would the latest version of navigator 2 (that comes with the newest linkstation) also be able to manage the older version of hardware, or would I need to navigator 2 versions running - one for the new item and the existing one for the 1st generation LS?
It might seem like an idiot question, in that ordinarily vendors maintain backwards compatibility of software, and thus the answer should be yes, the newer version will manage the older NAS it finds on the net. However, that did not apply to the soft/firmware versions after 1.20 (seems easy enough to detect the version of hardware the firmware is running on and operate to suit) so I thought it desirable to at least ask the question.

You will be fine with just one NAS Navigator installed. To be honest I've been using linkstations for over 8 years without the need for the NAS Navigator at all.
Thanks for that.
I'm impressed by the quick response, to this item at least. Is there any chance of a similar reply to my recent (separate) post re 1.2gb files to a HDD attached to the usb port of the Ls-chl device.
