Title: TS-IGL/R5 Series Failover
Post by: matthewhill on April 08, 2009, 03:12:20 AM

I'm looking at purchasing two TS-IGL/R5 Series NAS devices but need clarification on a couple of points:

  1. Can two of these units mirror each other so if one fails the other continues to provide iSCSI as if nothing has happened?
  2. If the answer to question 1 is yes then do the units automatically re-RAID between themselves when both are online again?

We are trying to provide a non single point of failure solution and have been unable to find NAS devices that work together to provide a single iSCSI connection.

Thank you

Matthew

Since the RAID between the two iSCSI units would be controlled by the computer (i.e. two logical volumes RAIDed by the computer) if/when one unit fails it will not automatically restructure the devices. As far as the iSCSI is concerned I've only seen RAID 5 in action among 4 iSCSI units. More to the point I would see RAID 1 as a possibility between the 2 units but automatic restructure is not possible in my opinion. You would have to replace the faulty drive on the iSCSI first, let it rebuild and then tell the computer to restructure the RAID between the two units. If you need clarification please post back. :)
