Title: Dell PE 1600SC, Windows 2000 Server, and USB 2.0 hard drive
Post by: greggmh123 on April 02, 2009, 11:21:51 AM

Hello!

I just bought a Buffalo DriveStation 1TB external USB hard drive, model HD-CE1.0TU2, to connect to a new client's old PE1600SC server running Windows 2000 Server SP4, now fully patched with MS updates. The drive has a feature where it will power itself on as soon as it sees a USB connection, and it connects, turns on for a few seconds, then turns off, without ever showing the drive in Windows Explorer.

This server also has a RAID array and runs OpenManage...a really old version. The OpenManage application takes the place of the standard Disk Management application.

Does anyone know if the problem is likely to be the USB port, or if Dell OpenManage is somehow interfering?

The drive works fine on any XP system, and it is supported under 2000, so the OS itself should not be the problem.

I will go back to add a PCI USB 2.0 card today or Friday to see if that helps.

Thank you for your input!

Gregg
