Title: Mac Question
Post by: eric65 on March 30, 2009, 03:57:09 PM

Hello - I just bought the Drive Station HD-CEU2 500gb external hard drive for use on an eMac G4 desktop computer. I moved the iTunes music folder to the drive icon where it transferred the approx.12 gigs of music and files into the external drive. My question is this: Should I now delete the iTunes music folder from the eMac harddrive, and play/download iTunes music into the external drive? I'm afraid of losing the music, and am unsure how to do this final step.

Thanks

It is recommended you keep your source files on your Mac. This device is meant as a backup but can function in the same vein as your internal HDD. Unless you have insufficient disk space to keep the iTunes on your local machine I recommend using your local HDD as your main source for playing/downloading and backing up the data at regular daily/weekly/monthly intervals.

Thanks much for your reply. It's somewhat disappointing probably based on my misunderstanding regarding 'backup'. I had hoped, as my daughter's eMac harddrive is terribly overloaded with only some 2.28gb 'free', to be able to get better performance from the machine by moving those heavy files away to an external drive. Would it be your opinion perhaps if I moved the music to cd's from the iTunes library, then deleted the library, that I'd be ok to operate playing etc from the external drive? Again, many thanks.

Again, if you're hard pressed for disk space you can use this device to play/download your iTunes.

Hi,

What I would do is this...

I would download SuperDuper! from Shirt Pocket software, and make an exact copy of your internal hard drive over to the external drive.

Then, I would simply keep the external drive hooked up, and boot from that drive, and use the external drive as my main drive.

You can then either wipe your internal drive, or use that to keep duplicates of files. I would imagine that drive is about 5 years old, so I wouldn't store important stuff on it.

I loved my eMac, but the "extra big" 80gig hard drive I had installed with it was way too small to begin with.
