I have been using the Buffalo Linkstation Pro Duo for about a month now, without a hitch. I have noticed lately that sometimes the file names get changed to where the first two letters become the symbols " ~$ " followed by the rest of the correct letters of the file name. When I try to open the file, it no longer is displyable by my Microsoft Word. My files are primarily Excel files, Word documents, and pictures as I use this HDD for work. I have only noticed this happening to my Word documents.

I am running in Raid 1 mode, and my drive is displaying that everything is normal when I log into it through firefox.

I originally thought nothing of it because I would have the original openable file also in that same folder, so I thought the HDD was doing this for file access or something. But now the original file isn't there, instead just the edited name that I cannot open, and this is posing a big issue for me. And it looks to be permanent, it's not changing back if I reset my computer and the HDD.

Any suggestions/ ideas as to why this is happening?

That's really strange... Have you tried renaming the files? Have you tried copying the file locally to the computer, then renaming it?

It doesn't seem like it would be caused by corruption, since that would affect more than just the Word docs. Perhaps Word is messing it up when it saves a file to the network drive...

I just received an identical unit (LS-WTGL/R1-V3) with firmware 3.07 exhibiting the very same issue. Google and friends does not return much useful, I was just lucky to find out this thread.

Was the issue solved somehow?

When using Microsoft Office programs with a Linux-based NAS device such as the Linkstation, do not save files directly to the NAS. MS Office programs (especially the newer versions) use a proprietary Windows File and Print Sharing API that the Linkstation doesn't support. The solution is to save the file locally, then copy the file to the NAS.
