Title: LS-CHL Shortcomings and poor file management tools
Post by: mlokhandwala on March 08, 2009, 01:05:38 AM

1. There seems to be no way of moving files between shares directly. So if I copied a 8 GB file and then realize I want it on another share, I have to use a computer which means a full READ and WRITE ... so organizing files is impossible between shares.

2. Can't connect the drive with USB. So in case you wanted to transfer 100 GB, and don't have GB interface on your laptop, have fun transferring @ 8MBbs on a 100Mb Ethernet link.

3. External HDD partitions are not detected, which means if you have a 250GB Hdd you want to copy from with 3 partitions, this drive only detects the first partition when you connect it to the USB. Which means you have no option but to do it thru your network, which raises point 2 again.

4. Why is there no telnet access? At least that way some users could have moved files via command line.

5. Bittorrent has no timer facility. This means for those of us who need to use it for downloads during the night and shut it during the day, the torrent client is of no use.

Can someone tell me if the above issues have any work around?

1. This is because SMB counts the different shares as separate filesystems. You can organize everything in subfolders under one share to avoid this.

2. The only product that I know of that is capable of this is our Drivestation Flexnet, but since that requires a FAT32 filesystem, it is limited. These devices were intended as pure NAS devices, essentially they are full-blown headless embedded computers.

3. Detecting a single partition on a USB drive is fairly simple from a development standpoint; however, it would be difficult, and thus costly (for us, and therefore for our customers) to somehow manage multiple partitions. As this feature would only affect a small percentage of our customers, it was decided to not include such functionality.

4. Telnet access is a concern from a support perspective. Most users do not have the knowledge and experience with Linux to avoid potentially damaging mistakes on the command line. I will send up a feature request for you.

5. This has already been mentioned by another forum member, but I will send up another feature request for you.

Colin,

This product could become a rage if unnecessary restrictions are removed. Remember that NSLU was a rage a while ago, and this product can replace it and ride similar success but you gotta let the community work it and not get in the way.

You guys must provide resume for downloads. I use ASDL 2Mb connection and yet the download keeps failing. I have downloaded 80 MB of 161 MB of  107 firmware 7 to 8 times now. You guys would have saved bandwidth and had a happy customer if you provided resumable downloads.

mlokhandwala: I will pass that request up to our corporate office.

too: search the forum for "force update". When you get to the debug menu, check all four options in the Config section. "Rebuild partition table" will erase all data on the device, so make sure you have it backed up.
