If I change out the main PC that hosts my network will I have to reconfigure the Linkstation somehow, or will I just install the buffalo software and that will 'find' the linkstation and set up the relationship? I want the to fire up fromthe 'auto' power setting.
You do not need to reconfigure the LS or install any software (except the Nas Navi 2 for the auto power/sleep feature, which you can get from the downloads section of this site)
On your new comp you want to go to Start>Run>\\ IP of the LS (which you can get from the Nas Navi). Then right click on the folder you wish to access and select Map Network Drive. Then you will see the LS listed as that folder and drive letter in My Computer.
This doesn't work in Vista. I set the drive up using the network utilities, but everytime I log out, when I come back I have to reconnect drive using name and password. Why? This didn't happen in XP or on my Mac.
Did you check the option to reconnect at logon when mapping the drive?
yes I did. Vista shows the share as a 'network' device not as a drive. When I put the linkstation IP address in the browser, I don't get the Buffalo Utility, I get the 'my computer' icons of the file folders on the Linkstation. I connected the Linkstation thru the Vista utility, because the option in the manual where you use the RUN command followed by the linkstation address did not work.
jazzbo9,
When you went to Run you put in "\\[IPAddressofNAS]" not just the IP correct? The problem is that it all hinges on how you're accessing the NAS. With XP you could've been accessing it by IP and XP would store your credentials for protected folders until you restarted your computer. With Vista it should be working the same way, but the only time I've seen such an issue is when the NAS is being accessed by the NetBIOS/LS Hostname that's shown in the NAS Navi utility. If the share is being shown as a network device then that's where it's supposed to be when it's mapped as a network drive. The only NAS that we have that shows up as a local drive when properly connected is our TeraStation iSCSI units. Please post again if you're unclear on anything. :)
