Title: File permissions on LS-500GL in OS X
Post by: saudi01 on February 27, 2009, 04:34:00 AM

Guys,

I have a Linkstation Pro 500gb (LS-500GL) with firmware 1.15 (my problem also exists on 1.03).  I have it connected to a gigibit switch and then to my Macbook.  For months I have had no problems accessing my shares and the folders in those shares.  I have had access controls on the linkstation as well.  Recently I removed the access controls and was copying a bunch of files to and from the drive. Now, suddenly, I can't access one of the folders in my share.  All the other folders are fine, but one of them when I try to open it says I don't have permission to do so.  I have tried resetting the linkstation, I upgraded the firmware from 1.03 to 1.15, I have turned access controls back on and off again, all without luck.  I then tried using chmod to change the permissions to 777 and while I didn't get any error messages to that, nothing happened.  I have used a utlitiy called Batchmod to do the same, it says 'Done' but again, there are no changes, still can't access the files.  I have mounted the linkstation with afp, smb and ftp, all the same error.  With my ftp client (Cyberduck) I have tried to change the permissions and it gives me the error that permission denied (even when I log in as the admin.  Using the terminal on OS X I have type ls -l and the permissions associated with this folder are non existant, nobody can access it.

Any ideas how I can reset the permissions so I can regain access to it?

Thanks

Cameron

Try going into the interface. Then go to maintenance, then initialization. From there select restore to factury defaults. It will not delete your data, but it will delete all the settings in the firmware. This and upgrading the firmware are the best ways to fix permission issues.

I'm also having this issue with the LS CL6F0 in Vista, tried the current firmware and no changes. I'll try the restore settings shortly.

EDIT: Lemme edit so I dont hijack a thread, but I am curious if it will work on OS X. It didn't work on Vista. Still can't change permissions.

I figured out a way that worked.  I had to install the modified firmware (jtymod5), clear the root password, then ssh into the linkstation as root, then use the chmod command.  I also changed the owner to the admin as it also seemed corrupt.

works fine now, didn't lose any data.

Glad to hear you got it solved saudi, Im curious about this modified firmware, where do you come across such a thing? Im curious if that method will work on my vista issues.

EDIT: Found the firmware but sadly not for my type... the features in that are genius and makes me wonder why they arent included in the first place. I'm still going to try it, whats to loose... the reason I have the thing isn't working!

I have a LS-500gl, with winxp as client. i have a folder 3059ta previously created, but i accidentally deleted it. now i can't access it. i have upgraded the firmware from 1.03 to 1.15 and later also restored to default settings. but i can't access the 3059ta folder. it say unix user/298. but for folders that say unix user/225 can access. How can i access the folder 3059ta that say unix user/298 after resetting to default settings?

Thank You
