Title: Locked MiniStation HD doesn't prompt for password
Post by: roman on October 10, 2008, 02:16:58 AM

I used BUFFALO Secure Lock Ware to lock my MiniStation 320GB hard drive.

When I tried using the hard drive on another computer (actually two computers, both Windows XP), it was recognized, but I wasn't prompted for password and drive letter wasn't assigned. In "Disk Management", the hard drive shows up, but the partition is not recognized.

I tried using Secure Lock Ware on these computers to unlock the drive, but this software didn't find locked device connected to computer.

BTW, I know the password, so I am not tried to break it or anything like that. I just want to get the password prompt somehow.

Thank you for your help.

Issue resolved. Apparently the drive can only be unlocked on the PC used to create the password. I guess I'll use TrueCrypt instead, so I can use it on multiple PCs.

What do you mean the drive can only be unlock on the PC used to create the password? As long as you install secure lock ware on another PC you can access your external protected volume by entering your password.

TrueCrypt is lighter, but the downside is the encrypted volume shows up in the MY COMPUTER window by default as a volume not formatted vs. Secure Lock Ware who hides any encrypted volume until to enter the correct password.

If you do not share your computer TC is of course better (much, much better) and supports RAID tool. However if you lend/share a computer and the other user(s) has also administrative rights, chances are that person format unintentionally a TC partition without any warnings.

I have a MiniStation Datavault and can't open the secure drive on an XP computer for which I don't have administrator privileges.  I set the password on a Vista computer for which I do have administrator privileges, and assumed that I would be fine on the XP using my new password.

No such luck.

There must be a way.  Right?

Thanks,

Fred

Just to be clear, I'm using a Ministation Datavault which has the encryption built-in, that is, it's not running the standalone SecureLockware software.

I am, though, having the same problem listed in the subject line.  When I try to run the Password.exe program, I don't get a password prompt.  PASSWORD.EXE and Password.exe are both shown in Task Manager as running processes, but nothing happens.

Surely, the Ministation Datavault doesn't require administrator privileges to operate once the password has been set.

Thanks for anyone's help and suggestions.

I just tried it on a Vista computer at work for which I don't have administrator privileges, and it worked just fine.

That suggests that if I reset the password at home on an XP computer for which I do have administrator privileges, then bring it in to work to my XP computer for which I don't have administrator privileges, it will then work.

Make sense?

Didn't work.

Something may be more restricted on my XP at work than I'm aware of.  I'm going to see if I can try it with a different XP computer at work for which I don't have administrator privileges.

Didn't work on the other computer either.

At least this time, I got a password prompt.  I entered my password and it started to open the secure drive, but something happened in the middle and it went back to the Utility mock CD drive.

hello,

i have the same problem. the buffalo ministation HD-PHS120U2/UC-R does not prompt for the password. you hear the disk spinning a few times, as if it tries booting up, but after 5times it stops trying, then it waits a few seconds and tries again 3 times, again waits a few seconds and tries again 3 times. after that nothing.

is there a way to

makes no difference if the securelockware software (slwlconf.exe) is an active process in Task mgr

in the device mgr (windows XP), under disk drives, i can clearly see a USB device that appears when connecting the usb cable and dissapears when i disconnect the usb cable.

i like to recover the backup data that is on the HDD. any suggestions are much welcomed.

thanks

hi

i have a ministation extreme HD-PZ1-OU3R. the situation is similar to as what others have said. i enabled the password protection, but the moment i switch to a different pc at work it doesnt prompt for password authentication.

the only solution is too install the encryption software in every PC that one would want to plug in the drive. now that is really erroneous and unacceptable assuming somebody wants to plug in a public or private pc.

Buffalo should have given due thought about this prior to making such encryption. we users have to bare the brunt of it.

its quite sad. the earlier versions of Buffalo Hard drives that is PNF-1 series are much more ahead in this regard. once enabled the password protection they will ask for password in any other pc or same pc if its plugged in.
