Title: Slow printing / Linkstation reads/writes a lot before print dialog opens.
Post by: Papa on February 17, 2009, 03:59:24 AM

Hello,

I have new Linkstation pro Duo and it's now in use as my family media server/fileserver.

Also I was connect Our HP LJ 1015 printer to it's usb connector.

We can print but it is slow, linkstation keeps reading or writing long time before print dialog opens on Win Xp computer and after I press OK button on print dialog it does same again.

Is this normal with Linkstation?

I think XP asks some information about printer and linkstation gives it very slow keeping noise with it's harddisks same time.

Is there any solution to fix it?

Same situation here with LS-CHL and HP DJ 3900 series USB printer. There are no differences between XP32 and Vista64 environments. Is there a way to improve the speed?

This is just the print job spooling, you want to have the latest FW installed, but besides that there isn't much to be done about that.

I was use another device make this same job before bought linkstation, it doesn't contains any hard disk and works faster.

Is it possibble to make linkstation FW works faster with printers?

Otherwise I'm happy with my Linkstation.

I was clear Print jobs from Linkstation and problem disappears:smileysurprised:

Now it works fast enough and no more read/write every time when we do anything with printer.

Edit:  Now it does it again and anything doesn't help:smileysad:

Can you help me understand what have you done? Have you cleared your print queque from LinkStation web menu?

How many jobs have you printed before it slows down again?

I was try to clear print queue from Linkstation web menu, I think it helps because problem disappears once.

Problem comes back next day and this time anything doesn't help.

I try clear queue, disable and enable again printer support, restart linkstation, etc....

Today problem makes me crazy because i'm programming one application that uses printer, it's terrible job when starting printing takes 10 seconds and one page printing takes same + normal printing time.

Because I almost lost my mind with that too slow printing I try update linkstation software to newest version:

I was connect LS directly to my PC ethernet port (while I do that LS goes off because its automatic powercontrol) then I make backup from LS to PC with Ftp program, after that I try how printer works with direct 1Gb connection and problem was gone.

After I connect LS back to my router (without SW update) problem still gone.

I was print out several (20-30) jobs after that without problem, it works fine at moment.

I must try if I print something from our Linux machine to see if it makes something weird..

I will be back about this when I found some way to reproduce this problem.

So, with your LS connected to the router the printing job was very slow, but when you connected it directly to you PC ethernet port it worked fast. The odd thing is that when you connected it back to your router, the print was still fast.

Your test demonstrates that bad printing performances are not a technical issue, they are not a LinkStation technical limitation.

Can we aspect a firmware fix for this issue that affects LS-CHL and Linkstation pro Duo?

I make many tests with my LS conserning about that printing problem.

I found that problem must be with linkstation.

I test it with directly connected new Computer that have fresh Vista install with all updates.

With vista it's almost impossibble to use printer connected to LS, it is much more slower than printing from XP.

Vista includes own drivers for that printer so it cannot be some driver problem, it cannot be some problem in XP or in my own computer because I test it with brand new Vista computer and it doesn't work.. so problem is in LS.

Can Buffalo staff tell me what to do with this?

Is there any way to fix it or is my LS broken?

Now I can't make it work correctly anymore.

Now I try to update firmware for LS if it helps, maybe there is something wrong with firmware installation.

I will be back with news if update helps or if it brokes my LS totally:-(

Edit: Update goes fine but it doesn't give help for my printing problem.

Anything going on with this problem by Buffalo?

I just disconnect my printer from LS because it's impossible to use it with LinkStation.

Printer is now connected to My Wippies Homebox (Free device), it works fine and fast.

I hope that someday we get software update for LinkStation that makes printers to work correctly with LinkStation too:robotsad:.

For LS Software programmers...

Only I found is: it works fine with linux client but not With XP or Vista.

This problem can have something to do with .NET framework (or not to have, it's just my intuition.)

Notepad.exe has nothing to do with .NET but it's affected too when problem happens.

At moment problem Still all the time in My LS. At begining I get it work fine 1-2 days.

I have the same problem with a HP Deskjet 5150 and I tried three updated HP drivers that deemed by HP that work with the printer for Vista X64. None of them works when printing a PDF file that is larger than usual say 20 mb. My point is specific to the reply that this is somehow a printer preference issue. It is definitly not. I installed the printers using three different drivers and each printed a test page just fine and they were printed very quickly. However when it tries to print a large file, you can observe the linkstation gets busy like crazy (flashing lights never stops). I never waited more than 10 minutes as even if it prints, I'd deem that the print server is not usable just for performance reasons. Luckily, I still have a separate networked print server around that i can connect this printer to.

As for Buffalo Tech, please fix the issue if you want your customers continue to purchase your products. So far, I'm happy with the file serving capability but dissatisfied with other features you claimed on your products such as "added printer server capability, etc".

Hello, it's not a problem with Buffalo firmware.

It's the SAMBA process with DNS resolution, if you use the ip adress instead the hostname for connect your printer (exemple on windows xp : in start\execute type \\192.168.5.1\lp ), the dialog box and print job work fast.

Bye
