Title: Drivestation HD-CEU2 making clicking noise and not being recognized
Post by: pshawn on February 16, 2009, 10:03:39 AM

Hi,

I bought a new 1TB  Drivestation HD-CEU2 and was in the process of backing up files from my Windows PC onto it. I was doing manual copy(folder from my PC to a folder on Buffalo drive) and I left a overnight copy job. In the morning I discovered that the Buffalo drive started making a clicking noise(5/6 times) and makes a whirring sound as if it is searching for something then again clicking sound. It is constantly in this cycle and the drive is not being recognizable. I disconnected power and also tried connected to multiple windows PCs. It is doing same. I formatted it to NTFS when first installing the software. Is there a solution to it? I want to return it, but before that I want to delete the files I copied to it but I am not able to do so. Any help is appreciated.

thanks,

Pshawn

Sounds like the disk just failed.  Call in for an rma and we delete all the informations on the device as soon as we recieve them.

thanks Kameron. Instead of RMA, can I just return to the store? Will the drive be sent back to the manufacturer from the store? In the case of RMA will I get a new drive sent to me?

thanks,

Pshawn

If you just purchased the unit, then yes, returning to the store is probably your most convenient option. Typically, stores do send the units back to us if they are returned for exchange. If you were to RMA the unit through us, according to our warranty, we repair the unit.

The same thing has just happend to mine. Got a new laptop today and plugged my hard drive into it. Had to re-start my laptop because of a windows update, and before it came up with the sign in screen it started checking my external drive, thats when it started clicking, and has not worked since. I have had it for less than a year. I got it from great universal catalogue. I know i have two years garanty, but who do i send it too. If i remember correctly, great universal said if there are any probs, then i have to go through buffalo.

MORRISON1976, the warranty period for that product is one year. Call your local support line to set up an RMA.

:smileymad: The same thing happened to me today with my 1Tb Drivestation HD-CEU2.  I've backed up my laptop and desktop(approx 900Gb) onto the drive and then it started clicking on next use and now is not being recognised.  The drive is only 10 months old and was bought for me last xmas from Amazon and has had little use.  The most annoying thing is that I got this drive so I WOULDN'T ever lose any data and now It would seem i've lost years worth of family photo's, video's, music , drivers, personal work, email archives, most of which could NEVER be replaced.

I can't put into words how gutted I am this has happened and only wish I never trusted this drive in the first place and backed up all our memories/work to dvd!!!

Is there ANY way to resolve this other than paying rediculous amounts of money to a recovery company?

Unfortunately not, AndyB. The only way to get the data off a clicking drive is to use a data recovery service.

If you backed up your laptop and desktop onto the drive, don't the laptop and desktop still have the information on them?

DVD isn't failsafe either, DVDs can degrade and fail just like any other storage solution. The only way to be sure your data is safe is to keep it copied on multiple storage devices.

Thanks Colin even though it's bad news!  I backed up my Laptop & Desktop to create more space and am now kicking myself for not playing safe :smileysad:.  If I sent the drive to one of these data recovery companies wouldn't that void the warranty as they would have to access the case to get to the HDD? The drive is not a year old til Dec.

Do you know of a relatively cheap/reputable recovery company?

Many thanks

Andy

ESS ( http://www.datarecovery.com/ ) and DriveSavers ( http://www.drivesaversdatarecovery.com/ ) are both excellent recovery companies. Here in the US, if a customer goes through one of those companies, we can still uphold the warranty. I'm not sure about our colleagues in the UK, though, I'd recommend contacting them to be sure about the warranty terms.
