Title: TeraStation AD Authentication
Post by: Nox on February 12, 2009, 01:32:41 PM

On our 2 Terastations we are able to create shared folder and grant permissions to those shares using our Active Directory 2003 groups and users.  However, we cannot set permissions on sub-folders or files within that share.

Is there a way to work around this?  We are running the latest firmware.

No there is not, you are unable to set sub folder permissions through your AD controller itself or through the Terastation.

Are there any plans to add this type of support, or are there any products that you sell that can do that?  Is there an un-official patch that can do this?

Providing that the answer to all of the above may be no, is there a limit to the number of shares a TeraStation can support?

We bought 2 of these because they can "Integrate" with Active Directory.  But now it turns out that they really don't...

The ISCSI variant of the TS PRO II supports what you describe. It shows up as a local I/O device and you can apply as many NTFS permissions to as many folders/sub folders as you wish. However that is a SAN and not a NAS so they do not function in the same way.

As for the amount of shares a TS can support there really is no preset limit.

That's unfortunate.  I've had NAS devices in the past that supported full NTFS permissions that were around the same price range.  We bought the TeraStations because they came highly recommended and your marketing material says "Active Directory Integrated".  While I understand the product is on the mid-range of a business line of products, marketing something as AD Integrated one would expect NTFS permissions be part of basic functionality (not just share point permissions).

Even your own datasheets and specifications talk about Active Directory & LDAP for the Pro II.  I never would have thought to even ask about the feature I was looking for.  I understand that a SAN would do what we needed it to do, but at the time of purchase, the NAS was stand-alone, cheaper in price (we bought 2) and was AD Integrated...

I wish we would have at known about the limitation in advance so at least we would have been aware of the limitation.

I have the same problem, just got the device today and to my surprise and can't set permissions on subfolders. We got this base on reviews and as stated before is "AD Integrated". Do you plan to fix this  ?????

Agreed that it's misleading!  We're in the same boat, now having to create individual shares for users, a major pain considering that the TS interface is less than adequate to set permissions.
