Title: LS-XL with Master Boot Record failure
Post by: dbezar on May 27, 2013, 09:15:46 PM

Hello All:

I have a Linkstation model LS-X3.0TL.  the drive light on the front is constantly flashing blue and the drive does not connect to the network anymore.  I tried to do the TFTP instructions here:

Step 1 http://forums.buffalotech.com/t5/Storage/FAQ-3-of-5-TFTP-boot-procedure/td-p/100319

Step 2 http://forums.buffalotech.com/t5/Storage/FAQ-2-of-5-Force-Firmware-update-procedure/td-p/100317

Downloads:

Firmware- http://buffalotech.com/support-and-downloads/download/ls_series-164.zip

Nas Navigator- http://www.buffalotech.com/support-and-downloads/download/nasnavi-256w.zip

TFTP Boot- Found in first link.

I was able to do the first steps shown in FAQ 3-of-5, but the drive never showed up on my network, so I could see it with NAS Nav and then push the LS Updater.  It appears that the Master Boot Record is toast.  I am willing to do whatever it takes to get the data back, even if I have to void the warranty.  How can I recover the MBR and mount the drive?   PLEASE HELP!!!!

The drive never shows up in the NAV updater, so I the LSUpdater can't find it.  LSUpdater says "LinkStation that needs updating wasn't found.  I have changed cables as well, just to remove that variable.  Thanks for your help!

If desperate, you can disassemble the unit, take the disk and connect it to a Linux desktop.  Assuming that the drive is good physical condition, the drive mounts automatically.  The partition 6 is the data partition.  Warranty will be void, but after assembling and reinstalling firmware the unit should be fine.
