Title: LS-320GL: cannot access files on HDD
Post by: ssturbo on March 19, 2013, 01:15:46 PM

product = LS-320GL

FW = v1.15

OS = Windows 7 Home Premium SP1; Windows Vista SP2

NASnavigator = v2.43

problem/symptom = cannot access files in shared folders; cannot map drive

- via Windows Vista, I can see the shared folders, but accessing files requires login and password, none of which allows access to the files.

- via Windows 7 Home, I can see the shared folders, but accessing files reveals an error message specifying "cannot access [folder]. Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. Error code 0x80070035. The network path was not found."

- attempts to "map remote default share to drive letter" results in "Failed mapping. Remote default share is missing."

history = I had my LSpro working well for over one year, and I'm not sure what triggered this failure to access the files.  I did have the HDD hit capacity a few weeks back, but I was able to access it immediately and reduce capacity to only 95% full.

I did confirmed the following:

- router is functioning properly, and LS does show as a network-attached device

- LS's IP address 192.168.1.3 does not conflict with other devices on the LAN (subnet mask = 255.255.255.0; gateway = 192.168.1.1)

- NASnavigator can see the LS on the network

- web settings do show shared folders

- Windows workgroup = WORKGROUP

- Windows homegroup is enabled

Attempted to resolve problem by performing the following (all efforts in vain):

- reset IP address

- removed all access permissions to all folders

- spent two days reviewing threads on BuffaloTech forums

- forced flash firmware update

- installed and executed "Buffalo File Security Tool" for management of access permissions

I am hoping to access files again without having to format the HDD.  PLEASE help.

davo, thank you for the suggestion.  I have not done that, for I have never accessed the NAS via FTP.  Could you please point me to where I might find instructions to do that?

Log onto the web admin page and go for the shared folders, select the share you want to access and check the FTP check box. Make sure FTP is enabled under shared folders -> Services. Then to access it open your browser and in the address bar type: ftp://IP-Of-Linkstation/disk1/share-name.

As a follow-up, troubleshooting indicates a corrupt HDD (after over-filling the HDD, by mistake), rendering it unreadable by the LS-320GL, which itself works fine with another XFS-formatted HDD.  Can anyone suggest any *free* PC-based software that allows reading XFS files for recovery purposes?
