Title: Secure Lock / Buffalo MiniStation Extreme and non administrative windows accounts
Post by: paulaaronevans on March 01, 2013, 11:20:48 AM

Hello,

I wish to puchase a Buffalo MiniStation Extreme 1TB USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive for the purporse of using it on my limited account work PC whilst keeping my files secure behind encryption / secure password.

However i've been looking for ages for an secure drive that will simply work with a standard user account on a Windows PC with no administrative permissions / ability to install any software.

I'm hoping this Buffalo Extreme will be the answer i'm looking for.

Can anyone confirm if this drive has this ability?

Obviously i have full administrative powers on my home PC and will be able to setup the encryption / secure password from there.

Regards

Paul

Won't work unfortunately, you need admin rights to install the software to decrypt the HDD.

Cheers, you just saved me an from a disappointing purchase!

I've seen IT techs use integral memory sticks that don't require any software to decrypt and encrypt, they just plug it in, Windows asks for a password and upon successful input, everything appears to work.

They just don't do reasonable sized traditional hard drives, only small SSD's.

Thanks for your help, i'll keep looking.
