Hi everyone!
I want ask you please... Is possible to use 4x 3TB drives in my TS-HTGL/R5 Terastation Pro II (originally 4x 1TB drives)
I tried two ways, but still without success:
a)
- I deleted the RAID there to have SINGLE drives,
- I changed only one (first) drive from 1TB (originally) to my new 3TB drive,
- I got error, that the first hdd is not formated,
- I tried to format the drive with XFS Format, but I got format error.
b)
- I changed all drives to my new 3TB drives,
- I started the Terastation with E06 error,
- so I used the TFTP Boot Recovery -> all LEDs are green and Emergecy Mode comes,
- then I tried to upload new firmware by TSUploader (I tried 1.33 and 1.35),
- I get still "ACP_State_Failure"
- so I used ACP_Commander to clear the /boot partition
- the command is: java -jar acp_commander.jar -t 192.168.11.150 -o -cb (the IP of my Terastation)
- the process looks OK, but then when I try to upload my firmware, I get still the "ACP_State_Failure" error!!
Could somebody tell me please if the HTGL supports the 3TB drives?? Or is the kernel limited? If yes, is possible to hack the kernel with basic Linux skills?? :-)
Many thanks for your help!
Thank you for your replay, I appreciate that!
But could you write me more please, what's wrong with the 3TB drives??
I have also Seagate Black Armor NAS220 6TB = 2x 3TB drives, where are the 3TB drives originally and they work. But the communication with my CFD software is terrible.
So I thought, that they will be work also in Terastation... Now I have serious problem, because I spent 560 euro for four 3TB drives and I can not use them...my boss kill me :-)
And what is the maximal size of drives in HTGL? 2TB?
The Terastation cannot accomodate 2K sector size HDDs which HDDs larger than 2TB use.
What about disks using advanced formatting? LIke western digital reds. Even though they have larger than 2k sector size, the firmware of the disk emulates 512. Apparently even the 2tb WD Red Disk has 4096k sector.
Hasn't been tested, feel free to try it yourself and report your finding here.
It worked without any issues. Going to test a few days before making any serious data moves. 5.5gb raid 5 array. 4x 2tb Western Digital Reds
So does this mean that 3tb WD red disks would also work ?
I wonder the same thing myself. The 3tb drives use the same type of firmware.
I also tested the raid recently. I pulled the drive reboot, data was still intact. Reconnected the drive and the NAS rebuilt the array. Nothing bad happened :)
I'll let you know, just ordered the drives but have another use for them if its not going to work...!
awesome. let us know, i'm very interested after all the research i've done.
Would love to hear from someone who's actually tried to install 3Tb drives to confirm for sure whether it can be done or not. They're only £10 - £20 more than the 2Tbs.
@aventure:
So.... what was the outcome when you tried the 3Tb hard drives? I want to upgrade my Terastation II and the suspense is killing me! Please post!
I have the 3tb wd reds, what is the procedure for swapping them out.
Hi there, some news about the 3TB drives, is it working ? Thanks for answer
I would love to hear how the 3TB drives work. 2 years ago I swapped out the original 500GB Samsung drives with 2TB samsung drives. I run RAID 5 and have about 5.5TB of usable space. Unfortunately I'm out of space again. I see that the TS-HTGL/R5's are going on ebay for pretty cheap and was thinking about picking another one up. This time however I think I might want 4x4TB drives. I have been leaning toward the WD Red drives.
Has anybody tested a similar setup or have any thoughts on my chances of success? Thanks!
I would like to know that, too.
I know that the buffalo-systems are... well... not very good, to say the least.
I have decided for a Synology DS-413j with 2x500GB for that reason. After upgrading the Synology to 4x500GB, then to 4x1TB and then to 4x3TB, I had 2 sets of HD's uselessly sitting in the drawer. So I went for some cheap 4bay-systems to reactivate these HDs.
I startet with a VERY by intel SS4000e, which could only handle the 4x500GB with VEEEEEERY slow speed, and got my hands on a HS-DHTGL/R5, which ran happily with the 4x1TB so far.
Now I'm again running out of space and decided to upgrade the synology to 4x6TB WD RED and to move the 4x3TB Seagate NAS ST3000VM001 to the Terastation.
I tried one of the HDs for testing and the Terastation recognizes it as 2TB only.
So, anyone got more than 2TB running?
I read some hints about non-official-firmware-builds, but could not find any information if that would allow bigger drives (e.g. if it's worth the hassle).
I am of course searching for a cheap synology or qnap as replacement, but the 6TB-HDs already cost a fortune and I really can't spend any significant amount of money on a NAS-System, so I'm willing to fiddle around with whatever can make use of the 3TB-Seagates
Has anyone upgraded the Bufallo Terastation II in the same way?
I've done some research and found the only resolution is people have successfully upgraded this NAS with 4x 3TB WD Red dives giving a total RAW capacity of 12TB before configuring it into a RAID 5 volume. People seem to suggest you can go above 3TB per drive, with more recent drives, but i've not really found anyone I have confidence in yet! Plus, nobody seems to have confirmed that using 4x 3TB Western Digital Red drives works?
