Title: Hard drive is failing on my LS-VL
Post by: vadimdr on February 07, 2013, 09:54:21 PM

Hi,

Today I have noticed that my unit led is blinking RED one long and two short blinks. I have rebooted the unit several times and it did not helped.

Then I logged in into the unit with SSH, checked the logs with cat /var/log/messages command and saw the following:

Feb  7 04:10:01 my-nas smart_logger[7534]:   5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct   0x0033   033   033   036    Pre-fail  Always   FAILING_NOW 2762

So it looks like my hard drive is failing. Now I am trying to copy all the information I have on it back to my computer (and getting errors on specific files), but basically I need to replace the drive on the unit.

I have several questions regarding this procedure:

- Is it possible to replace the drive on the unit?

- Is it possible to install a bigger drive (today I have 2Tb)

- What kind of drive should I buy (I understand the drive installed is WD Green)

- Do I have to partition the new drive before installing it into the unit ?

- How do I restore the firmware (if needed) to bring the unit back to the operational state?

Thanks in advance

Thanks for the help, but I have LS-VL NAS which is single drive NAS. So I am afraid part of firmware is located on this disk ....
