Title: Linkstation Pro Duo LS-WVL/R1 Slow Transfers after adding 2nd Drive
Post by: usafa92 on February 03, 2013, 12:08:26 PM

I'm a novice at NAS gear.  A month ago, I upgraded from a DLINK DNS-321 NAS to a Buffalo Linkstation Pro Duo (LS-WVL/R1) with v1.64 firmware (the latest).

After initial setup of the LS-WVL with a 1TB drive in bay 1, I was getting transfer speeds over my Gigabit network at around 50-60 MB/s.  A couple weeks later, I installed a 2nd 1TB drive into bay 2 and enabled Raid 1 to mirror the drive in Bay 1.

Now i see transfer speeds of about 10-12 MB/s.  This is for large movie files (1+ GB size).  Is there a reason why enabling raid would drop my transfer speeds so low.  Anyone else have this problem, and if so, what kind of solution did you come up with?

I'm wondering if I should disable RAID and just have the unit backup drive 1 to drive 2 once a day instead of live mirroring.  Is this even possible?

 Thanks

I am getting 18-20 MB/s on writing files to NAS with essentially the same setup - RAID 1. I guess I should consider myself lucky then, since you are only getting 10-12 MB/s. But even the 20 MB/s is really a far cry from the 75 MB/s transfer speed that is stated for LinkStation Pro Duo LS-WVL on Buffalotech's website and in marketing brochures. I came here to the forums to check if there are any reasons I am getting just about a quarter of the maximum speed. It looks like RAID 1 does indeed cause some slowdown; but does it cause the 4x slowdown? Hmm...

If you are looking for speed more than anything, then try RAID 0. The 75MB/s speed is for read speed and write speed will be lower (usually around 25MB-40MB)
