Title: Remove RAID Discs, replace with non-raid.. wont boot
Post by: Moonchild on December 26, 2012, 09:37:05 PM

Hi All,

I have Linkstation Quad with 4 drives in it.

1 & 2 are a pair of 1Tb drives in Raid1

3 & 4 are individual 1Tb drives (non-raid)

I no longer have immediate use for the data on 1 & 2, and want to Archive the physical drives (it's all business stuff so I need to keep for a numnber of years).

I shut down the unit, removed drives 1 & 2 and tried booting up without any drives in those bays. Got a blue flashing light.. no access using web interface or NAS Navi. Tried with a blank, new 2TB hard drive in Bay 1.. same result. Replaced the RAID discs, booted as normal.

With the drives out, I was expecting to be able to get in and see a RAID error, at which point i would remove the RAID configuration and reconfigure Drive 1 as stand alone.

How can I do what I need to do? Why wont the unit give me access when I remove the drives? How can I reconfigure for no-raid without actually deleteing the data on the raid drives?

Thanks for any assistance.

The operating system is loaded on the drive in bay 1. You remove this drive and you remove the operating system. Your best bet would probably be to move the data to the 2TB drive and archive it. Then you can reconfigure the RAID.

Ah, that explains why that doesn't work then, thanks for the explanation.

Would it be possible to replicate the partitions that contains the o/s on the new blank drive before installing it in that bay, or does the LS expect the first 2 drives to be setup as RAID because that's how I purchased it?

I was thinking I could replicate the partition structure from one of the other single drives (from bay 3/4) and copy the o/s from the RAID drive's o/s partiion over..?

Sadly can't find any documentation on how the LS expect the drives to be setup. As my non-raid disc would not be the same as an existing one (currently Drive 1 has the o/s, but that is part of a RAID, Drives 3 and 4 are same as I would want, but wouldn't have the o/s) I would need to figure out how exactly the LS looks for the o/s.

PS: I am very linux savy and have no problem working with XFS / RAID drives from my desktop without using the LS.
