Title: Buffalo Drive Station Issue - lights on but nobody is home
Post by: redhawk911 on November 05, 2012, 09:55:17 PM

Hi i have a buffalo drive station 1tb as is usually the case it appears to have suffered some sort of random failure with lots of my data on it.

I have tried 3 usb cables but they work with my other drive anyway and the power leads work as well.

The green light is on as normal but it is not detected in my computer or computer management in administrative tools, when i turn it on .. it gives what i can only decribe as a slightly deeper and different vibration when it comes on, not particularily unusual but i dont believe my other drive does it .... thats about the only unusual factor, otherwise it should be working.

Im inches from attempting to somehow get the case off and plugging this directly into the pc to see if anything is salvagable .... but the case seems fairly impenetrable.

Ive been looking at recovery software but as the drive is not there its a problem ... ive used test disk before with good results

does anyone have any ideas on how to make my drive visible again ... so i can attempt to rescue my data .that hasnt been backed up..

kind regards

B T W

Is it detected in Device manager and/Or Disk Management?

Have you tried another pc?

this drive is just out i think ...  if ive nothing to lose i suppose cracking open the case and investigating in a different case or in the pc directly would be an option has anyone done that??

I would suggest  a caady, but hey PC  workss too, if it is a controller error you should have no hassle recovering your data,The way I see it you don`t have anything to lose.

How was the drive formatted?
Does disk management see it at all? As in a grey box saying unk or anything?

ive never seen it in disk management but in the universal serial bus controllers section of the device manager yesterday, a USB mass storage device appeared which vanished when i disconnected the drive, along with the disconnection tones im getting, i believe something is happening somewhere

Formatting was left as straight out of the box

however its very hit and miss as i havent managed to get this Mass storage device to re-appear

ok so now i took the hard drive out of the enclosure, then plugged it directly into the pc via the cables .. the pc refused to boot and i was unable to view it in windows once i got it to boot

then i reconnected it via the usb cables but still outside of the enclosure . then it made what i can only describe as a funny noise and now it appears in computer management and my computer but is extremely unresponsive and is not showing any information, if i try to access it .. it just hour glasses .. i am in the process of trying to run test disk to see if i can recover anything from it

does anyone have any other ideas for repairing accessing the disk as test disk seems to be taking an age to load up

IN COMPUTER MANAGEMENT IS HAS FILESYSTEM "RAW" IN IT and when i click on it in my computer it now says "H is not accessable the parameter is incorrect"

* update *

i rebooted the pc and the drive vanished again .... then after about 20 minutes the connected tone went and ive got the drive back ... still unable to access .. any thoughts ??
