Title: Linkstation Live won't recognize WD My Book USB drive
Post by: mtabbene on February 01, 2009, 01:22:37 PM

I just purchased a Linkstation Live (500GB) Model #HS-DH500GL. It works fine on my network and can be accessed from XP SP2, XP SP3, and OS X 10.4. I also purchased a Western Digital My Book 500GB USB drive (WD5000H1U-00) to serve as the backup disk. However, while the USB drive shows up in the NAS Navigator and in the browser, the browser hangs up whenever I try to open Disk Management or System Status | Drive Properties. The browser error from Drive Properites is:

Webpage error details

Message: Object required
Line: 5
Char: 2
Code: 0
URI: http://192.168.1.6/cgi-bin/html/en/script/menu.js?param=2006818111

This problem occurs with Internet Explorer 6; Firefox 3; or Safari.

Here's what I've tried. I moved the new USB drive to my older Buffalo NAS but the same problem occured. Since the My Book comes preformatted as FAT32, I attached to a Linux machine and reformatted as EXT3. Nothing has changed. In and of itself, the USB drive is 100% accessible when directly to a PC.

I would appreciate guidance or some other options to try. Thanks.

Try connecting it to the NAS then rebooting the NAS.  Then format the usb disk from the web interface of the Buffalo device, this will put the drive into a XFS file system.

No luck. Buffalo Tech Support suggested reloading the firmware but the updater won't push 2.11-1.01 firmware since the NAS is already on that release.
