Never had this problem with XP, but something in Win7 doesn't like my HD-HS500IU2 Drivestation external hard drive. When doing a backup, connected via USB, the drive stops accepting data after about one hour of use. The red LED will stay on. This happens in full blow Windows 7 64 bit or when using WinPE7. I have set the Power Mode on the external drive to Manual, so it's not the Auto power thingie that's causing the problem. I'm not aware of any Win7 setting that puts USB to sleep. The computer does not go into standby. I have it set on all the time. When I get the hang, I cannot eject the hard drive in Windows. I am forced to do a hard power off. It's like the USB loses sync or something. Anyone have any ideas? As it stands now, I cannot do full backups with this drive on my Win7 box.

Go to your "event viewer" in Win7. What are the log errors right before the hang and restart. Look at the "warnings" too and post them both so I can help further.
