Title: Can I play music stored on Linkstation Pro on my iPhone without iTunes open on a PC?
Post by: carsokk on October 19, 2012, 01:26:50 PM

I hope someone wiser than me can answer this question.  Is there any way I can i play music stored on the  Linkstation Pro itunes media server on my iPhone without iTunes open on a PC?  I have a  Linkstation Pro LS-XH2.0TL.R.  I have nosed around the internet and have found discussions of Firefly, iTunes media servers, etc.  But, I can't seem to find a definitive answer if it is possible to accomplish this feat.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Thanks for the reply, but it doesn't work.  But, let me explain.

I have followed the procedures described at http://buffalo-sg.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/13999/kw/itunes, What does work (as it states in the instructions) is "Computers on the network running iTunes can access MP3, M4A, and M4P music files from the LinkStation's media server."

Also, I can access and play the iTunes library  that is stored on the Linkstation Pro on my iPhone when that library is open in iTunes on a PC on the network.  However, I can't access the iTunes media file that is stored on my Buffalo Linkstation Pro when it is not open in iTunes on a PC.

What I want to be able to do is to play music stored on the  Linkstation Pro itunes media server on my iPhone without iTunes open on a PC.  Then I could play that music on my stereo system through airport express without turning on a PC with iTunes open.

So, is there any way to do this.  Or, do I always have to have a PC on with iTunes open?

Thanks again.

I tried and tried a year ago and the bottom line was that you have to have iTunes running to make it work.  I think if you search you will find many coming to the same conclusion.  I even have AppleTV and I have to have it open to access music files, can't remember for photos however.
