I bought a 4TB Linkstation Pro Duo three weeks ago primarily for its embbeded BiTorrent client and I have upgraded its firmware to the latest version (1.60).
After setting up the NAS and enabled the BitTorrent function, everything was working properly.
So BitTorent on my Linkstation has been working just fine in the last three weeks (except it seems to a bit slow when compared to PC uTorrent).
(I was thinking what are all these complatins on this forum bout the torrent client not working. It's looks fine to me).
Fast foward to this this evening.
I decided to power off my LinkStation so I can move it to a more desirable location in my room.
Here is how I powered off my Linkstation:
1) Log in to BitTorrent web UI and stop all download and upload activitiy.
2) Turn the power switch to off and wait for LinkStation's embedded OS to shutdown properly.
After I turned on my LinkStation again and logged into its admin web page, I noticed the BitTorrent function was disabled.
So I went in to Extension -> BitTorrent screen to re-enable the function.
However, when I click on the "Open Download Manager" button to access BitTorrent's web UI (http://192.168.xxx.xxx:9090/gui/ ), my browser could not connect to any web page.
(The URL of the web UI is identical before and after I power off my LinkStation).
I tried different browsers (Firefox, Opera, Chrome) and none of them can load the web UI.
I don't even get a BitTorrent user login and password prompt at all!!
I have disabled and re-eanbled the BitTorrent function several times but the problem is still persist.
I also tried powerig off my LinkStation serveral times.
I even restored my LinkStation to factory default settings twice and repeated all the steps to enable BitTorrent but I still cannot access BitTorrent's web UI.
It seems to me BitTorrent's own web serivce at port 9090 is NOT running at all!!
Right now my Linkstation is just a expensive and slow external NAS and I am already beyond the 15-day return period my local Fry's allows for storage products. (Fry's allow 30-day return on most other products but only 15 days for storage devices).
Now I know why there are so many complatins about the embbeded torent clients on this forum.
(Now this problem reminded me of unpleasant experience I had in the past using the embedded torrent client in my WZR-HP-G300NH router running Buffalo's "friendly" firmware. Why did I not remember that when I bought the Linkstation?).
It would be greatly appreciated if anyone can help me resolve the problem.
Thank you.
Okay. Looks like no one knows how to fix the problem I have and no Bufalo staff responded either.
(Yeah, I know this forum is not an official support channel but I have seen many messages posted by Buffalo staff here).
Anyway...
I finally got the BitTorrent web UI working again after I re-flashed the firmware (same version) *AND* re-created the RAID volume.
It looks to me the embbeded BitTorrent must have become corrupted somehow and most likely whatever configuration files or paramters used by the process were also corrupted which would prevent the process from running properly.
Otherwise I would not need to re-flash firmware AND re-create RAID volume to wipeout whatever corrupted **bleep** was left behind on my linkstation.
And of course, I had to copy everything I have downloaded back to my PC first and it took several hours to copy 150 GB of large size files at a rate no higher than 11MB/sec.
So much for the "up to 72MB/sec" advertised on the back of the LinkStation Pro Duo box.
My PCs at home all have very good Gigabit Ethernet speed using standard size MTU. I can easily achieve 90MB/sec to 110MB/sec when copying large size files between a Windows Server 2008 and my Windows 7 workstation using Windows Explorer.
The more I think about this, the more pissed I feel.
I probably should have tested file transfer first the day I bought this unit and had I know 11MB/sec is the best I can get, I would have returned this unit to Fry's and get something else (possibly a Synology NAS).
