Title: Power failure will trash my backup drive ???
Post by: burtontechsuppo on August 28, 2012, 03:22:46 PM

Just taken delivery of a brand new Linkstation LS-X1.0TL and reading the manual there is a warning that if I don't shut down properly before removing power it will damage the NAS, not *may* damage - *WILL* damage. What happens if there's a power cut? Is my backup drive killed and presumably not covered by warranty as I didn't power off correctly? What sort of a backup drive can't handle a simple power failure !!!

Its the same with any OS, powering it down incorrectly can cause issues, not will, but can.

Yes I'm aware that sudden power loss can trash OS's but this doesn't seem to be the case here, and most NAS drives use Linux which is very tolerant of power loss. The warning is that the drive *must* be shut down through the software interface before removing power or the drive *will* be damaged. My question is what happens in the case of power failure, which is always a possibility for anyone. Is this warning OTT and just covering Buffalo's ass or is it a real danger that the drive will fail due to a power cut. I've used NAS drives before and never seen this sort of warning. Makes me leery using the thing without it being hooked up to a UPS. BTW - it's for a customer so I'd also be leery of them trusting their backups to this drive without an answer from Buffalo.

This is not true at all!

Thanks for the more reassuring reply. If all that is likely to happen is that it would need a firmware flash to get it working again then I can deal with that as and when, The warning in the manual implied that the result would be to brick the drive. I'll be able to instruct my customer better now on how to handle the NAS backup solution I'd suggested in place of their RAID5 system that had trashed Windows and would not recover. As usual, their manual backup was not done as it was too time consuming!
