Title: How to identify exact type of USB-disk?
Post by: Hengga74 on January 25, 2009, 01:29:40 AM

Hi,

I recently bought 2 Buffalo USB-drivestations (750 & 1000GB) and would like to know disk manufacturer without breaking the casing. All that winXp tells is "Buffalo external HDD USB device". I would like to know exact type because of recent problems with Seagate manufactured disks: I don't want to loose almost 2 teras worth of data.Is there anyway to identify maker without using hammer?

Thx.

If the web interface is similar to my Linkstation live, you can see what kind of HDD you have inside.

Go to "System Status" then "Drive properties".

You can see the unit name. If the name is ST31000340AS or similar, you've got Seagate HDD inside.

Edit : Sorry, I just realized that you're on a DriveStation, not a Linstation so you probably can't see a web interface.

If it's the case, I don't know how you can see this information. :(
