Port 445 closed; Cannot access NAS except via http

Problem:  Cannot access NAS except via http
Error message when attempt to map share on PC: "The device or resource (Ts-tgldf7) is not set up to accept connections on port "The File and printer sharing (SMB)"."

OS is Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bits, Service Pack 1.
PC is HP Pavilion dv5-1253cl, 8 GB RAM, Intel Core2 Duo CPU T6400 @ 2.00GHz
LAN is a 1000Base-T (gigabit) ethernet network.  ISP is Verizon DSL.  Access Point/Router is Westell T7500 in default configuration.
The only firewall is Windows Firewall in standard configuration for private network.  The firewall on the router is set to pass-thru mode.
Turning off all firewalls and virus software makes no difference to the problem.

Affected NAS is Buffalo Technologies TeraStation Pro II, TS-H1.0TGL/R5. No USB ancillary drives attached. Firmware revision is 1.04.
TeraStation is set up with a static IP address.  Authentication is delegated to TeraStation as part of a workgroup.
There is a second NAS on the network, Western Digital MyBookLive, set up with a static IP on the same router as part of the same workgroup. It is fully accessible.
Also on this network is a TiVo network-attached DVR.  It is fully functional.

The TeraStation NAS has been operational for several years on different computers using various Windows OS's plus several versions of Apple's OS-X and Linux.
It currently is onlt attached to the Windows 7 PC.  Various routers have also been used (both ethernet and wireless) over the years.

This problem started after the major winter storm we recently had which resulted in power outages and brownouts.  All of the computer equipment is powered via UPS systems.
The TeraStation NEVER crashed.  It was manually powered down before the outages started as was the PC and all ancillary equipment (router, USB drives, MyBookLive drive, etc.).

After the power mostly stabilized, everything was brought back online and full hardware tests were run on all components.  Everything checked out fine.
While running these tests, Windows Update downloaded and installed over 40 updates in the background (without my realizing it).  The system is supposed to create system restore
points prior to doing any installs.  Only four could be found and none of them would restore successfully (as I later found out).
My Gmail downloads via POP3 started failing (but Mac and Verizon/Yahoo POP3 still worked).  Then the network-mapped shares started failing to restore following reboot (but USB
shares were unaffected).  Restored system disk from last system image backup.

The restore resolved the MyBookLive connection problem but all other problems remained including not being able to access files on the TeraStation.
Downloaded the latest TeraSetup and TSNavi on 11/05/11 and attempted to re-install. The re-installation of the TeraStation failed (the software failed on connect TeraStation to
network because the TeraStation could not be found). NASNavigator Ver. 2.13 installed but cannot locate the TeraStation NAS.  Interestingly, the Westell router recognizes the
TeraStation was a NAS device installed on the network.I can ping its IP address but not by name (\\Ts-tgldf7) and nslookup cannot find an IP address for it by name.  The same
is true for MyBookLive.  Not a surprise since both are set up as part of a workgroup and not a domain.

These entries from the TeraStation system log seem to pinpoint the problem but I don't know what to do to fix it:

Nov 6 23:54:26 TS-TGLDF7 terastation[18859]: [Web] View page from User:admin, RemoteAddr:192.168.1.21, RemoteHost:(unknown)
Nov 6 23:54:10 TS-TGLDF7 processmon: exec [/etc/init.d/ls_servd restart]
Nov 6 23:54:10 TS-TGLDF7 processmon: >IsProcessExist:process doesn't exist.[/var/run/ls_servd-eth0.pid]
...
Nov 6 05:07:04 TS-TGLDF7 terastation[948]: Started smbd nmbd
Nov 6 05:07:03 TS-TGLDF7 terastation[939]: Stopped smbd nmbd winbindd pamsmbd

Using Advanced Port Scanner, I found that the TeraStation does NOT have open port 445 (Microsoft-ds aka SMB over IP).  As I understand it, this port 445 is required to be open
in order for file sharing to occur.  I have another NAS (MyBookLive) which is able to be mapped successfully and it DOES have both ports 139 (netbios-ssn) and 445 (Microsoft-ds)
open.  TeraStation only has ports 80 (www-http), 21 (ftp) and 139 (netbios-ssn) open.

I tried installing firmware updates TS-HTGL_1.33_1.32 and TS-HTGL_1.35_1.39 in the hope that they may contain a fix to my problem but of course, they cannot be installed since
my PC cannot communicate with the TeraStation.

How do I get TeraStation to open port 445 or is there another work-around?

Have you simply tried directly connecting the unit to another PC and booting it while holding the reset button? You cannot manually open or close any ports on the Terastations.

Rebooting into EM mode did not change accessibility except that I now only have guest access to the web admin for the TeraStation Pro TS1.0TGL/R5 even using admin user & admin password.
