Bad LS-W1.0TGL/R1 firmware flash corrupts partitions?
« on: May 05, 2010, 05:08:44 PM »

I accidentally flashed a 1.x firmware onto my 3.x-based LS-W1.0TGL/R1.  From that moment onwards, it has been completely bricked and unresponsive, even when I take out the HDDs.

Using UFS Explorer (trial), I see the following partition layout on both HDDs (sizes are in sectors, with a 512 byte sector size):

primary partition - firmware?

file system: Ext2/3
disk offset: 0x000000000000003F
disk size: 0x00000000001EA3FE (0.95 GB)

primary partition - system
file system: SGI XFS

disk offset: 0x00000000001EA43D
disk size: 0x000000000098B7AF (4.77GB)

extended partition
file system: unknown

disk offset: 0x0000000000B75BEC
disk size: 0x000000003980F055 (460.02 GB)

{

    partition - swap
    file system: unknown

    disk offset: 0x0000000000B75C2B
    disk size: 0x00000000001EA3FE (0.95 GB)

    partition - user data
    file system: SGI XFS on HDD1, unknown on HDD2

    disk offset: 0x0000000000D60068
    disk size: 0x000000003947162A (458.22 GB)

}

total disk size: 0x000000003A386030

From what I've been reading from various sources, the system and swap partitions should only be 128MB in size, correct?

Also, if you see, the file system on the data partition of HDD 2 is not being detected.  This is because the bytes begin with the "IAN˙" signature (0x49 0x4E 0x41 0xFF), whereas on HDD1 the bytes begin with the "XFSB" signature (0x58 0x46 0x53 0x42) instead.

Does this look right?

The first 2 partitions on both HDDs appear fine, I can see all of the Linux files.  If I do a lost files recovery on the data partition of HDD 1, it does find a lot of files, but cannot recovery most of the directory structure (the found files appear on the root, and most of the folders it does find are named "inode_xxxxxxxx".

What are my options for recovery here?

The program will be able to recover most of the files as you have stated, but like most recovery programs the file structure will be thrown completly out of wack.  The structure would need to be re-created manually.  If there are other programs available out there I am not aware of them.  The only way to get everything back including file structure would be to contact a professional drive recovery service such as drive savers.

One problem with doing the manual recover is many of the files have similar filenames, so I won't know which files go in which folder without examining each individual file.  And many files I've had for a long time, I don't even recognize them anymore.  Oh well.

I would go with professional recovery, except it is so expensive.  A few weeks before the LinkStation crash, my laptop HDD died (it won't even power up), so I now have 3 HDDs that are pending recovery.
