only getting 65mbps with WHR-HP-GN
« on: December 05, 2010, 05:17:14 PM »

I just bought a WHR-HP-GN and have it setup in N only mode.  I disabled the DHCP server (running it as an AP only) and have my HP elitebook with an Intel 5300 wireless card connected to it.  No matter where I am at (in the living room or 2 feet from the router) I am only able to get 65mbps with it.  It is rated as 150mbps so I am curious why I can only get that speed.  I connected it to my Toshiba LED LCD as well which has a wireless N card and it also connects at 65mbps.  Any ideas on what the deal is?

switched to WPA2 personal mixed and made sure TKIP +AES mixed mode was selected, still at 65mbps and I am sitting next to the router.

I have the same problem using Asus UL30A laptop. No matter where I am, the connection speed is only 65mb. The router came 2 weeks ago, with the latest DDWRT firmware installed from the factory, same v24 version as on the Buffalo web site.

I have set the router to N-only, 20mhz, using WPA2 personal mixed, and channel 9 (least used channel in the neighborhood). Still only 65mb connection speed. Using Windows 7 ultimate.

the whr-hp-gn is not mimo device.

e.g whr-hp-g300n = 2 transmit and 2 receive antennas, on 40mhz bandwidth that = 300mbps, and on 20mhz bandwidth = 150mbps.

he whr-hp-gn = single transmit or receive which means on 40mhz bandwidth you get 150mbps, and on 20mhz bandwith you get 65mbps.  whr-hp-gn is not 300mbps capable device, its 150 max.

It is possible that there is a wireless interference between the router and the laptop that you are using, FYI, too short distance can also affect the frequency of the wireless computer.

Hey, I found the answer so I am replying to my own thread...

I initially tried setting Wireless Network Mode to G & N, so Channel Width had Full/20mhz as the highest value, and I was getting 65mb on my N laptop.

Although I later changed Wireless Network Mode to N-only, I didn't know Channel Width had new possible values, so it was still on 20mhz, and I was still getting 65mb.

Just looking around today, I found that I can set Channel Width to Turbo/40mhz now that Wireless Network Mode is N-only. Once I applied this setting, my connection jumped to 150mb right away. :smileytongue:
