I have a WHR-HP-G54 ver 1.40(1.0.37-1.08-1.04) wireless router. I recently bought a Mac Mini and want to be able to connect to it remotely. I have given the Mini a static IP within my LAN and have set up port forwarding for ports 5500, 5800, and 5900. I checked canyouseeme.org and port 5900 is visible (the others are not, 5500 times out and 5800 is refused).
When I try to connect via my VNC client on port 5900, the client only says "Closed".I have tried with two VNC clients and neither connect. I am able to connect from within the LAN, but I need to access the machine when I am away. (I have used logmein.com, but it has other issues, so I'd rather get the port forwarding working.)
I appreciate any advice you can offer.

VNC clients attempted: Chicken of the VNC and JollysFastVNC.
