Backup failure - please translate log error message
« on: May 20, 2010, 10:10:12 AM »

Linkstation LS-WXL023 2TB

Firmware: 1.26  (DTCP-IP:1.26-20100412)

RAID 0

USB Drive: LaCie Hard Disk 1TB, (formatted XFS by the Linkstation immediately before backup run)

I have tried several times to backup a 428.9GB share of MP4 and MP3 files using the (new)Linkstation's backup application, going to the (new) Lacie USB HD. The backups work for a few hundred GBs, then fail. I have tried doing a "Normal Backup" and a "Complete/Append. No difference in outcome, except that the failures do not occur on the same file. I need help translating this engineer language, especially "broken pipe". Here are the last two logs, edited to spare you the actual file names that got backed up prior to failure:

-------- BEGIN BACKUP 2010/05/19 14:05:27 array1/xyz/Music -> LS-WXL023@usbdisk1 --------
sending incremental file list
created directory /mnt/usbdisk1/_backups

.

-------- END BACKUP 2010/05/19 22:16:53 array1/xyz/Music -> LS-WXL023@usbdisk1 --------

Here is the prior one:

-------- BEGIN BACKUP 2010/05/19 07:59:17 array1/xyz/Music -> LS-WXL023@usbdisk1 --------
sending incremental file list

Either there is corruption on the NAS,  USB HDD or the file itself (i.e. corrupted to begin with).  Check the file "/Music/Gonzalo Rubalcaba/Inner Voyage/03 The Hard One.m4a" and see if it plays through correctly (i.e. without skips, pausing, distortion, etc.).  Furthermore, I would recommend a reformat of the LaCie to NTFS, perform a CHKDSK on the USB HDD and then re-connect to the NAS and format the USB HDD to XFS (this will help ensure bad sectors on the USB HDD are addressed) and attempt the backup job again.  If the issue is persistent beyond that point, re-check the USB HDD and see if there are persistent errors (in which case you may have a bad HDD) and run a RAID check on the NAS.

I am running a new Macbook (Snow Leopard), so I don't think I can re-format to NTFS. I did use Apple Disk Utility to reformat to FAT and then ran a check. There were some errors and they were corrected. I then reconnected the HD to the Buffalo NAS and re-formatted to XFS. I did check the two files that the two backups failed on and they perform normally. Now running a new "Complete/Append" backup and will let you know how that goes. Thanks for your response!

the backup failed again, same reasons, different file. This file, like the others that stopped the other backups, is not corrupted - runs normally

I am wondering if I should set the backup to continue despite errors.

See my post re Broken USB interface......  Same problem, LS-WXL/R1 NAS model, different USB drive - I have a 2TB Calvary USB 2.0 with a Hitachi 7200RPM 32MB cache inside, same errors as you get.

http://forums.buffalotech.com/t5/Storage/Broken-USB-interface-in-LS-WX2-0TL-R1-2TB-LinkStation-Duo-LS-WXL/td-p/30321

Reformatted the drive to NTFS, and right now I am copying the full data set (almost 600GB mixed small and large) over via a PC and teracopy 2.12 (does a crc verify of the files at the end, source and destination, to look for corruption).  If it works, I can clear the drive and state that this model of NAS from Buffalo has a broken USB interface which needs fixing.  Since the unit works much better (locks up after more files are transferred) w 1.26 compared to 1.24 (original firmware), maybe somebody is aware of the issue and working on it.....

Hello

I am getting the same error since  I have put the latest firmware 1.34 on LSCHL 1.5T.

The error is :

rsync: writefd_unbuffered failed to write 4 bytes [sender]: Broken pipe (32)
  on "/mnt/usbdisk1/_backups/Gerard/Images/USA 2009/2009_07_15/IMG_0623.JPG": Input/output error (5)
rsync error: error in file IO (code 11) at receiver.c(298) [receiver=3.0.3]
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (697812 bytes received so far) [sender]
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(635) [sender=3.0.3]

rsync: writefd_unbuffered failed to write 4 bytes [sender]: Broken pipe (32)  on "/mnt/usbdisk1/_backups/2009_07_15/IMG_0623.JPG": Input/output error (5)rsync error: error in file IO (code 11) at receiver.c(298) [receiver=3.0.3]rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (697812 bytes received so far) [sender]rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(635) [sender=3.0.3]

after 160GB of backup

but also often it fails with rsync error Read-only file system (30)

I reformatted the USB disk in XFS but it did not help.

One problem is the backup do each time a full bakup instead of an incremental. It makes that my new files are never backuped.

I do not know what to do except to throw it away and by a new one NAS but from another brand.

I am quite sure that the faulty is the buffalo NAS.

I really think that a fix must be provided by buffalo
