: Mac OS 10.7 (Lion) can't connect with LinkStation (LS-WX2.0TL/R1)
: ronstephens March 02, 2011, 12:28:41 PM

Here's the error message I get when attemting to logon to the drive via the Mac Finder. (Worked fine under os 10.6.6)

"The version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported. Please contact your system administrator to resolve the problem."

 Any suggestion?

The same question was asked a few days prior on the forums.  As of current time is OSX 10.7 is still in the beta stages there is no formal support for this OS yet.  As with all betas there are a series of bugs floating around the operating system that will cause limitations with connections and functionality with various devices.  The best source of information at this point will be from other users within the forums, either from Buffalo or from Apple forums.

just out of interest will it not connect via AFP or SMB or either.

I'm afraid I don't know what those are.  :manindifferent:

: VirtuaMcPolygon March 08, 2011, 05:28:36 PM

if you go to connect to server you enter either the ip address of the linkstation as

afp:// xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

or

smb:// xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

xxx is your ip address.

SMB sucks mind you from my experience with mac and linkstations. But it may work.

Oh and AFP has to be enabled in the linkstation.

Thanks for the info, but I just want to see the LinkTtation in the SHARED list  and click on it. Even if the other methods were successful, that's not a process I want to repeat several times a day.  :)

AFP no longer works in Lion because Apple has dropped support for for DHCAST128 authentication for security reasons. Manufacturers like Buffalo would have to support newer and more secure DHX2 standard to make their drives work again in 10.7

More info here http://trick77.com/2011/02/25/afp-broken-linux-based-nas-mac-os-x-lion-10-7/

I do hope that Buffalo will update their drives to support DHX2 authentication on AFP in time for Lion release.

Updated Buffalo driver this morning, but still no connection with Lion DP 4.

Bump. With Lion about to drop any minute, I may have to abandon BT in favor of a networkable RAID that provider that better keeps up with OS development.

I tried connecting via FTP (I'm using Lion, with non-existent AFP or SMB). The Terastation mounts, but the Terastation (Pro I) is read only. I tried all sorts of things, including spending an hour with Tech Support (Buffalo) but no progress.

Any suggestions/ideas.

Thanks.

Any news on this issue?

Support for their NAS, and especially for their Time Machine Backup, will be crucial for many Mac users when they upgrade to Lion!

Thanks,

Matthias

Not yet. Lion hits the street tomorrow - except for Buffalo Tech customers.

Same issue here, as I assume other people will have now that Lion has been publically launched.

Fingers crossed Buffalo can get a solution out quickly, as this kills my ability to backup (the only reason I bought the linkstation pro).

This link (Buffalo Tech Asia) suggests they are looking at a solution:

Thanks for this info.

It's a shame that Buffalo not even comments properly here on such an important issue.

Not impressed by Buffalo about this, and I'm glad I didn't do a clean install otherwise I would have had no ways of getting all my TM backup... I bought their NAS from a catalogue so I guess a return with a statutory right claim that their product is not of merchantable quality as it's not fit for purpose should do the trick (it should work with updated OS otherwise what's the point...).

The fact that someone posted back in March about this issue and they've sat on it all this time it's ludicrous and shows that their customer service doesn't care one bit about the flood of complaints. I won't be buying external HD ( I have two) nor NAS (hopefully I shall get a refund for mine) in the near future.

I had a dialog with them a couple of weeks ago and this is all I was able to get:

Buffalo Technology Helpdesk,?

Customer Reference Number: 130407

Dear Richard,

Thank you for contacting the Buffalo Helpdesk regarding your unit.

We don't really have a timeline when its going to be supported, this is all down to the dev team in Japan testing it out and if there was little issue could maybe take weeks then, if more complicated issue then could take months. I am afraid I can't give you a rough estimate.

If you require any further support please let us know.

Mahmoud

This breaks support for time machine, which is quite a big selling point for their Linkstations, so hopefully they will do whatever they can to address it.

The fact that people have signed up to the forum just to comment on this issue shows that it's going to be a major compatibility & PR issue for Buffalo.

Hopefully they start a more up to date dialogue in response to this thread.

Buffalo, the ball is in your court now...

Guys,

As you know, the entire authentication system for AFP (which Time Machine uses) changed in Lion. It now uses DHX2, and this affects everyone. Software can be updated for new authentication standard, and Buffalo is in beta testing of this new method with a priority to release it. However, we've seen the authentication time take a lot longer than usual with DHX2 so we're optimizing that.

I am trying to find out an ETA on an update and as soon as I know, I will update this thread.

Unforunately, my job role has more to do with social media and the press and less with testing or development of our firmware and products. However,  I will pass on to our engineering teams the willingness of our forum to do beta testing!

Thanks Jay, but you have to admit that since someone posted this 'hiccup' back in March, it shows that your company you represent doesn't seem to show any sense of urgency. The idea of running Beta testing is for techies to sort issues etc before the OS was released. Had this problem only being apparent today then I would totally understand. Anyway hopefully a software/firmware update should patch this. I have until mid-august to return my NAS so will wait until then.

I found this searching through google : http://www.alexanderwilde.com/2011/04/os-x-lion-connection-error-with-afp-and-workaround/?

It might help some peeps in the meantime, apparently it doesn't work with Time Machine but at least you can access your stuff if you backed up manually other folders or files.

Hello Jay,

Is there going to be a solution for all Buffalo ?products??

I have a Linkstation Pro Duo LS-WTGL/R1?.

That fix doesn't do anything for Time Machine according to the comments, just for protected folders.

Jay, I am happy that there is at least a point of contact with Buffalo and that you are providing an update on the current progress that the development team are having.

Fingers crossed someone is able to prioritize this.

EDIT: I have a LS-XHL (LS-XHL014)?

Fabyon,

It is unforunate that it has taken a while for the issue to get resolved.  However, it was not the forum that alerted us to this issue and regretable it take us time to identify the issue,  get the issue back to our engineering team, get the issue resolved and then finally tested.  As you can see this takes time.

However, I can say that it is not acceptable for you not to get some feedback and for that I will take responsibility.  I am sorry.

Fair enough Jay and I do understand that it's hard to track some faults in a big forum, but a filter with keywords such as beta, OS, etc... in a RSS form would be great so that someone can scour the forum for issues like these next time and the relevant people in the company can be alerted before they become a biggger issue ! :)

Yes. It just worked for me. Great idea - working at the problem from the Apple end. Just turn the protocaol back on.

Hold on, your excuse is you didn't know about it because you didn't read the forum threads?

You advertise your Time Machine compatibility. Lion has been in the works for a long time. The dev versions of it have been out for a long time. This is your job, to keep up with the major OS updates of you know major OSes. It's not like this was some obscure release of of Linux distro that accidentally broke something. This was a planned feature overhaul for Lion for months.

Come on Buffalo, gotta do better than that.

: Re: Mac OS 10.7 (Lion) can't connect with LinkStation (LS-WX2.0TL/R1)
: DaN-PwN July 20, 2011, 09:06:39 PM

lol

just dl lion and got a similar issue, checked the mac forums and now this

darn it!

well I have a Linkstation mini 1T, I can connect to it just like before, stream and transfer files with no problem. the issue however lies with the Time Machine feature. someone in the mac forums posted the following:

"Lion use the latest AFP 3.3 protocols that are only available in the Netatalk 2.2 version, many NAS devices are on 2.0-2.1 right now. ?

Netatalk is an open source AFP server basically, it’s how NAS can communicate with Apple’s protocols for Time Machine and other tasks like file sharing, iTunes and so on."

so I guess we'll have to wait and see, I'm no techy, just an enthusiast but if this is correct then we now depend on Buffalo to release another firmware, this could take months :(

Hi All,

Seems i'm having the same issue as everybody else. I tried the fix that was suggested at the page below

http://www.alexanderwilde.com/2011/04/os-x-lion-connection-error-with-afp-and-workaround/?

But now get a different error message so have reverted the changes:

http://postimage.org/image/kf58wh8k/?

Any news on how the fix is going Buffalo? According to SNB you have a fix but are testing it? Also the guys over at Synology already have there fix deployed:

Add  me to the list...

Upgraded my MBP to 10.7 last night.  I mostly like it, the only actual problem being no TimeMachine on my Linkstation LS-CHL.  :-(  I know quite a few people who use Linkstations for TimeMachine, and most will upgrade to 10.7 in the next few weeks.  This incompatibility is going to become a "big deal" for Buffalo if they can't fix it quickly.

I understand that Apple broke it with their decision to update the file protocols.  That's not Buffalo's fault.  And as a software developer myself, I completely understand that these things take time to fix.  But I do find it disapointing that 10.7 has been out to the developer community for months and Buffalo doesn't have a fix.  That's a problem.  They should have had a patch ready weeks ago.

Add that to the fact that every Buffalo Linkstation box in every store and vendor website, as well as Buffalo's own website claim to support Time Machine.  And as of yesterday they do not for every newly-purchased or upgraded Mac.  Come on Buffalo. Fix it!

Yep, I've just registered here to join the rather nervous club of users waiting for an update. I'm a photographer who keeps all their photos on a Linkstation, and am really needing to get at them again soon! For now I can grab the files I need using an old Windows machine and transfer them across using external USB hard drives, but this is a real pain I don't need right now!?

I don't have much to add, and can offer no techincal help at all, but figure at least adding my name to the crowd will help impress upon the good folk at Buffalo how urgently a fix is needed. I've subscribed to the RSS feed on this discussion, and am really hoping something is sorted out soon.

Thanks for the updated info.   I'd wanted to put my $.02 out there, that a fix will be available for ALL NAS products by Buffalo, that are still supported.

I have a Linkstation Pro Quad 4tb, and would like to ensure a fix will be available for all Linkstation units.

I hava a LS-WXL5E2 Linkstation. Upgraded to Lion today on my MacBook Pro and then read on the web that kills timemachine support.

The device does show itself in the "Shared" section on the left in the finder. Tried connecting to my device and all it does is show the files that a "Guest" can see. When I click connect as and attempt to connect at admin as I normally no I get this message

"There was a problem connection to the server "LS-WXL5E2  --- The version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported. Please contact your system administrator to resolve the problem."

This is NOT cool!! I need this to work. I understand that the timemachine support might be messed up. But are other people experiencing the fact they can't even connect to their NAS as a user other than guest?

Many thanks for any ideas/help

Lets all hope this gets fixed soon.

Jay:

Do you have any updates on the time frame to resolution?  I'm holding off on the Lion upgrade until this is resolved.  Unfortunately for me, I've already paid and downloaded the upgrade file.  It's just sitting there...tempting me.

Thanks for any update you can provide.

I can confirm following these instructions work. I can now log in as admin on my NAS and access the files I couldn't before.
Just a small point. When it says
"2)  From Finder, select an AFP server, or use “Connect To…”.  This will cause the AFP Client to create the full preferences file?"
All I did was open the finder and attempt to acces the NAS by clicking "connect as" and type in the admin user and password. Not the "Connect To.." that it says in the instructions. A small point but I was looking for "connect to" somewere.
Lets hope for a Timemachine fix soon as well then.

this is how i did it.

1)  Launch /Applications/Utilities/Terminal and do:
sudo chmod o+w /Library/Preferences
defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleShareClient afp_host_prefs_version -int 1
Now restart your computer.
2)  From Finder, select an AFP server, or use “Connect To…”.  This will cause the AFP Client to create the full preferences file
3)  Launch Terminal again and do:
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleShareClient afp_disabled_uams -array “Cleartxt Passwrd” “MS2.0? “2-Way Randnum exchange”
sudo chmod o-w /Library/Preferences
Now restart your computer.

Note:  To add a “DHCAST128? to the disable list, use
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleShareClient afp_disabled_uams -array-add “DHCAST128?

I can't get my TeraStation HD-H1.0TGL/R5, which is a very old 1 TB TeraStation, to connect with Lion. I get the same error message mentioned on this thread. No problem with my two newer LinkStations.

Can this same solution work for my TeraStation? If so, I have no idea how to use Terminal.

Do I just copy the entire string in each step and paste it in and hit return or does each of the sudo commands in step three have to be entered separately or ?

Same here.  I have the TeraStation HD-H1.0TGL/R5? and can't get the command workaround to work.

Please help!  I can't get to my files.  I really don't want to have to move back to Snow Leopard to recover my files.

Same here. I cannot use Time Machine with my LS-CHL. Lion has been available for testing for months. How is it that development did not test this and have a fix ready? This is unacceptable.

Hi all,

I absolutly agree with ronstephens !!! It's especially unacceptable in backup-business!!!

My problem: I upgraded to Lion, tried to backup the new system ... didn't work ... okay, wouldn't be happening anything untill the have fixed it, I thougt ... but then: the system crashed. I don't know why, but after I installed some other programs updates, the sytem didn't start over! Nothing helped, recovery and all the "normal" stuff you usually do ... nothing! Now I have to take a backup from my LS-CHL, that is a week old. The good nows is, that it's not older!

Okay, I'll get my Mac fixed, but it's a bad situation: Having a backup device which dosn't work and THAN having a blackout ...

Cheers to everyone!

Just adding my voice to the displeasure as well, how on earth can you not be aware that these devices wouldn't work with Lion?

I've got a  LinkStation Duo 2 TB? which I can connect to, but can't use TimeMachine to backup to. Which is making me very nervous as I do all my development work and accounts on this machine so now have to rely on manually backing up.

But now, I see that I am not alone in this case, and I am confident that Buffalo will offer a solution ASAP, and will provide us with a new firmware to take into account some new protocols, and solve this simply for everyone.

Buffalo has been aware of this problem since at least March (when this thread was opened) and they have done nothing about it. The problem is that  Apple disabled support for DHCAST 128 in OSX Lion and all Buffalo NAS drives need Netatalk 2.2 installed and updated to work with Time Machine. (Or Netatalk 2.1.5 source can be compiled with uams_dhx2 support.)?

They have acknowledged the problem on their Asian support forums:

http://www.buffalo-asia.com/support/macosxlion/index.html#networkhdd?

But I was told by a Buffalo tech that the Asian support forums do not apply to products in the United States.

If you are a dissatisfied customer, I suggest that you contact the Better Business Bureau and notify them of false advertisement, as Buffalo clearly does not support OSX 10.3.9 and later as it claims to in its advertising. Additionally, you can rate Buffalo NAS drives as 1 star on Amazon, Newegg and Tiger Direct--citing lack of support as your reason.

If Buffalo does not want to support its customers, then we should not support them as a company.

Two days ago, i bought a Link Station for only one reason: Backup my Mac wich Time Machine, because of the Upgrade to Lion.

Yesterday I' ve upgade to Lion and the new Link Station has this epic fail with the new Protocol?.

In the Store I've searched for a Produkt wich support Time Machine, and Link Station says: Look at me I'am compatible with Mac and Time Machine is no Problem.

Do you think your Products are compatible with Mac because of your knowlege, or do you say this because it is so trendy to have the Words Apple and Mac on the Box?

Buffalo fix up your **bleep**!

And no, I don't want a workaround, I want a fixed Firmware. We've paid for Time Machine Support, so give give us Time Machine Support.

I think I'm getting "buffaloed" on these forums - after spending nearly an hour with support and getting bounced to level 2 I was informed that there was no known beta or at least no beta anywhere close to being released per their support system.

The solution offered:  Contact apple support and demand a hotfix for their OS X Lion operating system.

If anyone is on here from buffalo and wants to speak directly with me on this matter I would love to do so - it should go without saying that consumers have choices and where Buffalo seemingly dropped the ball, other vendors will certainly learn and not make the same mistake.  Its rather unfortunate, Buffalo was not nearly as plugged into the OS X Lion beta as they should have been, perhaps Windows Customers are their bread and butter.  Actions speak louder than words.

Regardless, I'm giving it a week and then taking my 3 linkstations that are in use in a small business environment back to place of purchase, I know the owner of the store and I'm sure he can pass the costs back to Buffalo as they are technically outside of the return period.

Try the solution here:

http://www.alexanderwilde.com/2011/04/os-x-lion-connection-error-with-afp-and-workaround/?

It works.  The only thing it leaves out is that you may need to change the settings on the [USER]/Library/Preferences file as well as /Library/Preferences.  I tried it last night and it allowed my system to connect and use the LinkStation as if nothing had changed.

All the NAS mfrs (except Apple) have the same issue with Lion, from what I've seen on Apple forums. We are working on updates for most of the NAS to make them compatible with Lion and Time Machine. Expect updates to come out in Aug or Sept.

The FW updates from Buffalotech Japan engineers will be staggered - they won't come out all in the same week.

I don't know why I should be lucky, but I have two LinkStation LS-CH2.0TL-V2 on my network, both with AFP enabled prior to the Lion upgrade. Both are visible, mountable and useable from Lion Macs on my network. Perhaps they use a newer encryption than DHCAST128?

I can confirm that my shares on my LinkStation Duo (LS-WX1.0TL/R1, upgraded with two 2 TB drives and with the latest firmware) seems to work fine with Lion without applying any workaround.

TimeMachine fails however: The share appears in the TimeMachine preferences, but when I select it  I get an error message "There was a problem connecting to the server "xxx". The version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported. Please contact your system administrator to resolve the problem."

So, a fix from Buffalo is needed really urgently.

August or September?!?!?! ....this is rediculous. I would really like to know what the heck they were doing during the Lion beta phase. It seems nothing.

Time to move on.  This company's focus isn't quality products or customer satisfaction.

Otherwise they would have had a plan to address this.

No doubt. If they truly don't address this before August, it will be the last Buffalo product I buy. I bought this specifically and ONLY for use with Time Machine. I can't have something that will not work for 2 or 3 months every time there is an OS update.

drmemory - Unfortunately my confidence level in August and September are low for the following reasons:

Based on these reasons, I don't have a warm and fuzzy feeling (and I'm probably not alone).  If Buffalo cared and was customer/product focused, these items shoudn't be occuring days after Lion's release.

Will a rebate or some other good will gesture will be afforded for my time and inconvience?  There should be...my time is also valuable.

I found this on the Buffalo Tech site.

http://www.buffalotech.com/products/network-storage/terastation?

Notice this page says "Select Buffalo network storage products now support Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, see complete list here. "  The link on the page goes to a PDF, but the file won't open and says it is damaged.  So, I can't read the PDF.  Linked PDF is here:  http://tinyurl.com/44kgk7z?

(actual link is http://www.buffalotech.com/files/Buffalo_products_MacOS_X_10.7_Lion.pdf )

But my LS-QVL does not work!

I updated today to most recent firmware - 1.43 (DTCP-IP:1.40-20110204)?.

?

But I still get the same message: "The version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported.  Please contact your system administrator to resolve the problem."

Anyone here have any ideas on this?

File a complaint with the FTC and BBB here for false advertising:

https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/FTC_Wizard.aspx?Lang=en?

https://odr.bbb.org/odrweb/public/complaintlink.aspx?

Their NAS drives do not work with OSX Lion 10.7 or Time Machine on 10.7 but are advertised as working with any version of OSX 10.3.9 or newer. Buffalo has been aware of this issue since February and has not even released an official statement acknowledging that it is a problem or that they are working on a fix.

I have used Buffalo products for several years and have been very satisfied with them in the past, but I spent three weeks with their technical support and was treated as though I was an incompetent fool. I would have been fine with a reply stating "We are aware of the problem and will be releasing an update in the next 2-3 weeks" but I was told that there is no beta, there is no problem, and I don't know what I'm talking about.

If you don't complain, then the managers that are responsible for these screw ups will continue to provide shoddy support and ignore their customers.

This is the response I got from Buffalo Customer Support regarding this issue and my Linkstation Mini (Model: LS-WS1.0TGL/R1?):

These units have been out of production for some time. Try connecting via SMB
instead of AFP and see if that helps

Thank you,

Seth

While I did not think of turning off the AFP for each share, this answer is unacceptable to me. The fact that the unit is no longer in production is a lame excuse in my opinion for not supporting a product. That's why, I'll be putting this device on eBay and looking for a company that actually gives a **bleep** about it's products and customers. Shame too, since they have a local presence here in Austin, I was at one time proud to buy their products.

Btw, Seth's trick of turning off AFP support does allow you to mount and R/W to shares. However, things like Time Machine backups will not work.

: Whats about Netatalk 2.2
: Hitcher July 24, 2011, 04:00:56 AM
Buffalo have you access to Netatalk 2.2?
At this time only Netgear, Data Robotics, Western Digital Corporation and QNAP, has the access to this protokol.
Without this Protokoll Time Maschine don't work.
Netatalk 2.2 is not accessable on Sourcforge, maby in some Days.
The reason is, because the Developers want OEM Partners to finance the Project.
Some Manufactures have made a Deal with them.
Read this open Mail to get more Details:
http://www.netafp.com/open-letter-to-the-netatalk-community-501/
I think Buffalo is waiting until the Source-Code is for free on SourceForge again.
Buffalo can begin to fix the Time Machine Problem when Sourcecode is available on SourceForge again.

There is an Update in the Open Mail that says that that soon the source is downloadable again.

I think thats the reason of the Firmwareupdate in August or September, Buffalo don't want to pay Money to the Netatalk Project, but want to make Money with Devices that are not working with Lion.
Dear Buffalo don't write Time Machine Support on your Boxes, when you are not in the position like Netgear, Data Robotics, Western Digital Corporation and QNAP.

I agree with a previous poster that we should all complain to the FTC. The products we have are clearly labled as compatible with Time Machine, but they are not. This is blatant false advertising.

Really really annoying to have upgraded to Lion to find not only that my NAS didn't work, but Buffalo already knew about it !!!

I don't use my LinkStation for TimeMachine backups, but I do use it for regular backups of all of my movies/TV episodes and second backups of key data.

Since I could access my disks through Finder quite happily, when my Intego Backups failed I assumed it was an Intego problem. But no.

I'm within a couple weeks of purchasing more disk - unless we get a solution or a vendor supported workaround for this problem quickly (and August/September as stated as possibilities is unacceptable) then Buffalo won't make the shortlist.

I've got enough problems as it is without having key software break.

They have had months to get this ready so that their advertising continues to be true. Currently their claims for their product are false and they have clearly dropped the ball. Synology and Qnap appear to have this sorted with updates.

Was previously using my LinkStation LS-XHL without problems with Time Machine. Have upgraded to MAC OS X - Lion and? no longer works.

The Buffalo NAS was considerably better value than the Apple TIme Capsule alternative and I am sure Buffalo will fix this and confirm it was still a good decision to buy it - has worked beautifully until now.

Thanks in anticipation guys.....

I own a Linkstation Quad LS-QL and have been happy so far. For sure we should give the Buffalo Support Team a few days to deliver a solution but looking at the support websites of Synology and Qnap makes me worry. They already announced a specific update for the Time Machine issue.

Just to clarify, I did not say that the unit had been out of production as a way to pass off that we are not supporting the product. Just that the unit was out of production with all units sold well before Lion was introduced. As already stated in this thread, we are working on the issue, but I do not know of any specific date/timeline for this specific model.

Quotes from their website:

"Buffalo's LinkStation Live is the dependable way to seamlessly store and share your data in one location, accessible by any PC or Mac on your home network. ?"

"Support for Time Machine™ Functionality?"

That is from the current website specification for the Linkstation Live.

If you look around you can find something saying select devices work with Lion, but that links to a page that cannot be found.

(the link is here: http://www.buffalotech.com/files/Buffalo_products_MacOS_X_10.7_Lion.pdf )

Again, they have had months to sort this out. I have seen discussions from somewhere around March related to this issue. It's really not very impressive.

Why is it that we just find out about this now? Why are Synology and others ready for this and not BT? This is cake! We need this fixed now or I'll be forced to dump this Linkstation, never to return to BT and go with Synology. How about a competitive upgrade Synology??? We're getting mauled by Lion, yes, but BT left us out in the jungle.

I am returning my LinkStation to the store, and I have already placed an order for a Time Capsule. The way that Buffalo dropped the ball here makes me realize that I will never be able to rely on them for something critical. I don't want to say that I will never use another Buffalo product, but in this case, for something crucial that MUST WORK at all times, they are not a dependable company, and are quite lax and don't take important functionality seriously. And if anyone tells me that they want to use a Buffalo product with Time Machine, I will strongly advise them not so do it since the company is not reliable.

2. hasn't been sold for probably 7 years!!!

Yes, I have come to realize that.

Still doesn't make me happy as I wasn't planning to replace it due to this upgrade.  Good news is I have 4 MACs in the house and only upgraded one.  So once I purchase another vendors NAS I can easily move everything off of the Terastation.

I have a Linkstation Quad (LS-QL/1D) and have followed the instructions for getting AFP (file sharing) going again. Thanks for those that posted that.

Following that I looked around on the Internet for a way to get Time Machine working. Nothing

Decided to take matters into my own hands and took a stab at getting Time Machine working and succeeded. I did this by backing up the Lion versions of it and replacing it with Snow Leopard versions of it. I will revert it back once the Linkstation firmware update is ready.

What I did were the following steps. Quite a few steps but worth it in the end.

1. Make a backup of Lion's Time Machine software:

sudo mkdir ~/LionTMbackupsudo cp -r /Applications/TimeMachine.app ~/LionTMbackupsudo cp -r /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd*? ~/LionTMbackupsudo cp -r /System/Library/PreferencePanes/TimeMachine.prefPane ~/LionTMbackup

2. I then did a similar thing on the Snow Leopard Mac:

sudo mkdir ~/SLTMbackupsudo cp -r /Applications/TimeMachine.app ~/SLTMbackupsudo cp -r /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd*? ~/SLTMbackupsudo cp -r /System/Library/PreferencePanes/TimeMachine.prefPane ~/SLTMbackup

3. Zipped that one up then copied that over to the Lion computer's home directory (~):

cd ~sudo zip -r SLTMbackup.zip SLTMbackup

4. Unzipped it on the Lion Mac:

cd ~unzip SLTMbackup.zip

5. Deleted the Lion TimeMachine software:

sudo rm -rf /Applications/TimeMachine.app? /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd*? \
/System/Library/PreferencePanes/TimeMachine.prefPane?

6. Killed the running backupd, mtmd and mtmfs:

killall backupd mtmd mtmfs

7. Copied in the Snow Leopard Time Machine software:

sudo cp -r ~/SLTMbackup/TimeMachine.app /Applications/sudo cp -r ~/SLTMbackup?/backupd*? /System/Library/CoreServices/?sudo cp -r ~/SLTMbackup?/TimeMachine.prefPane? /System/Library/PreferencePanes/

8. Updated the standard exclusions files that will be used?:

sudo cp ~/LionTMbackup/backupd.bundle/Contents/Resources/StdExclusions.plist? \
/System/Library/CoreServices/?backupd.bundle/Contents/Resources?/?sudo cp ~/LionTMbackup/backupd.bundle/Contents/Resources/System.plist? \
/System/Library/CoreServices/?backupd.bundle/Contents/Resources?/

I ran a backup ok though Finder froze on me. I had to kill it and restart it. Small price to pay for working backups :smileyhappy:

To the PR guy (sorry I can't go back to check your name right now): Please tell the engineers that we, the customers, don't really care if the box runs slower using DHX2 because the delay is only when the share is first connected. The optimization they are working on can come later. What we need now are Buffalos that can serve Lions.

Mr. Jay Pechek?,

It is better to have a slow backup than two months of no backup. Please urge your development team to release a beta version of the firmware that technically works, even if it is slow.

Otherwise, make an official public statement that your hard drives do not support OSX Lion without hacking the operating system and update your advertising on your packaging.

As a reminder to anyone reading this forum, you can file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau for misleading advertising here:

https://odr.bbb.org/odrweb/public/complaintlink.aspx??

The Netatalk protocol is supported in previous version of OSX and there is no reason why a firmware update was not made available at the launch of the Lion, especially when your website and physical packaging advertises its devices as being compatible with Lion.

Regards,

Ben

Problem solved by Seth Z! All you have to do is update your firmware to the latest version, and it will work!

The only difference is you connect to the unit vis smb:// instead of afp://. Also
going by your other email, there is a newer firmware available

-Download the latest firmware from our website at
http://buffalotech.com/support/downloads/

-Unzip it and run the Updater (Usually TSUpdater.exe)

-You may need to disable any firewalls or security programs for it to go through

Thank you,

That's good news if the Beta is out soon. I don't mean this to sound confrontational either but where has this date come from? Why do you know it and nobody else does? Buffalo should be communicating with their customers directly, the PR guy seems to have gone quiet since last week!

It's still pretty ridiculous that's it's got to this point though, I don't care who's fault it is between Buffalo and Apple there should have been enough time before Lion went live to get a fix out there.

I posted similar links earlier.  But now Buffalo Tech has updated the PDF so it is readable.

  1. Go to this page on the Buffalo site:  http://www.buffalotech.com/products/network-storage/terastation?
  2. See the text that says "Select Buffalo network storage products now support Mac OS® X 10.7 Lion, see complete list of products here. ?"
  3. You can then open the PDF located here:  http://www.buffalotech.com/files/Buffalo_products_MacOS_X_10.7_Lion.pdf?

My device is listed and it says they are working on firmware fix.  You will also note they tested this during the beta period.  So, it means they were aware and part of the beta testing.  But it's just taking time.

I am big Apple fan, but let's be real and recognize that this is something Apple did and Buffalo is simply responding.

I'm still waiting and watching forums, internet, etc.  I would suggest you check the PDF above for your device to see if Buffalo plans a fix for your firmware.  At least you can make an informed decision before getting a different product or deciding to wait.

We are working on this. It takes time to get each new FW through Japan QA. With each new FW, depending upon the product, there may be added features, in addition to feature adjustments - a new FW is rarely released for a single feature; it is almost always a group of features, hence it is not a simple engineering and QA process.

I think we all realise that it takes time to develop, test and QA changes of this nature. It was the lack of information that proved initially frustrating. This has now been remedied in the most part through some of the communications and the tone of the messages on this thread has become far less agressive as a result.

Let's just hope that the promised firmware upgrade is not too far away and that it does actually resolve the issues we are experiencing.

I am curious...I bought my LS-QL in Nov 2010.  The documentation states that it supports client OS 10.3.9 or later.  If a firmware update won't be available for my model, could I return it to Buffalo since it would still be under the 1yr warranty and Time Machine feature is not working due to software problem ?

I have searched the list provided below and did not see my specific "new" Link Station Quad - LS-QL/R5? listed as planned for a firmware update improvement / time machine fix, I did however see LS-QVL/R5 Series? listed.  Will the Link Station Quad - LS-QL/R5? ?be included in this fix plan??

The beta is now available or EU customers on the EU knowledge base. I wouldn't suggest any customer outside of the eu uses it as it may have warranty implications.

I'm sure it will be on the US site soon.

I understand this is a newb question, but what are the steps to update firmware for a NAS drive (with OSX SL)?  I have the ?LS-CH1.0TL.  Should I go ahead and install Lion first?  Or wait until after I update the firmware?

I appreciate the help as I'd like to install this update as soon as it is available (US).

Thanks.

Ben,

If the Buffalo firmware update is like the others I've performed in the past, it's quite simple.  You'll download the file from Buffalo, then simply run it like any other installer.  The app should auto-detect your Linkstation, you'll click a few "Ok" buttons, then it'll update it.  I do believe they recommend using a wired connection, rather than over wifi.  Though I don't know if it's strictly necessary.  The update might reset the Linkstation's settings, or it might not.  Someone who's installed the Beta could chime in on that.

Many, myself included, have already updated to Lion.  When Buffalo releases the official update, you will be able to run the updater from either Snow Leopard or Lion, so that should have no bearing on whether or not you upgrade right now.  If you want Lion, read up on the changes and decide if you're ok with *not* having a funcitonal Linkstation-TimeMachine backup solution until Buffalo releases the firmware.  If you are, go for it.

If you update to Lion and require a TimeMachine solution while Buffalo is figuring out the firmware, you'll have to use an external USB or Firewire hard drive.  This still works perfectly, and is the method I'm using to keep my system backed up while Buffalo preps the update.  Though it's important to point out that in doing this I'm starting over with Time Machine.  An example of a problem would be if you updated to Lion and then discovered you needed a Snow Leopard backup from a few weeks ago that was housed on your LinkStation.  I don't know of any way you could get at it, unless you wiped your Mac and reinstalled Snow Leopard.

Good luck.

Delta5, thank you for that post.  Very informative.  Sounds like the installer will take care of the work for me, which is exactly what I wanted to hear.

I'm updating to firmware version 1.53 (beta) as I type this and so far Lion has connected to my my LS-WX2.0TL/R1 and it preparing to back up. I also have an old snow leopard backup done two days before I upgraded and will keep that as a safeguard but once I'm satisfied it works will let go of it. I was rining today to Littlewoods catalogues to return the unit when they refered me to Buffalo for an authorisation code to return it. But the Buffalo rep told me that the firmware was ready as of today......surprise surprise ! LOL

He agreed with me that if I don't get on with this firmware upgrade I could ask for an authorisation code. I just want to avoid the palaver of returning the unit and buying something new so if it works today I'm cool....although still wary of ordering Buffalo stuff in the near future.

Buffalo Forum,

Well I was going to come on here this morning and tell you the good news but apparently Tegan beat me to it.  I found out late last night on a conference call with Japan that we got the approval to release the Beta.  (My EU colleague was very fast on the upload!)  We should have some of our versions up here sometime today, some next week.

NOTE: this is a beta and with such there can be some issues that we have not foreseen.  This has not gone through all of the testing that we usually do!

Thank you for your patience!

I just updated my LinkStation Duo (LS-WXL Series) to the beta 1.52 Firmware but that still did not solve my Time Machine issue,  At least now the Drive is seen and even connects; however, when I try to do a back up Time Machine fails and I get the following Message:

The network back up disk does not support the required AFP features.

I did check in the LinkStation via the Navigator and AFP is checked.

Any ideas?

How should I enter the name into the system?? as just XXX or XXXXXXXXXXX???

?I have the LS-CH1.0L V1 too.  Same results, "no Terra/Linkstations found to update".  I was on 1.07.  I did successfully just update to 1.12 but that's as far as it goes.  Neither 1.52 or 1.53 will find the Linkstation.

Considering the V1 and V2 firmwares diverged form eachother quite a while ago, I have a suspicion that us V1 owners are SOL on Time Machine support.

Time to start saving up for a Time Capsule, I suppose.

: Re: Mac OS 10.7 (Lion) can't connect with LinkStation (LS-WX2.0TL/R1)

unzip it in your downloads folder, then open up terminal and paste this into it:

bash -x ~/Downloads/backupd_anyafp/install.sh?

then press enter. it will ask for your password, and will ask you to type "my data will be doomed!" (or something like this, dont have the exact sentence in my mind) in lowercase. nothing happens to your data, the calls the script does are all OK, just a (not so?)funny joke, though.

been using this since yesterday and it works beautifully :)

It's great that there is a hack to force Time Machine to use our older NAS devices.

But people really need to be very aware that doing this has risks.  Generally you want your backup solution to be as close to 100% reliable as possible.  Hacking Lion to force it to use older NAS devices could lead to corrupt and/or unusable backups at some point in the future.  You just don't know how TM will react as Apple inevitably releases patches.

And believe me, there are few things in the IT world as nauseating as believing you have a backup solution and then finding out that you didn't.

For anyone applying this hack.  Be darn sure to test it throughly to make sure it works for you.

I am not at all happy with Buffalo. I bought my LinkStation Quad LS-Q4.0T about nine months ago. I admit I didn't buy it for TimeMachine support but, despite the unsatifactory support from Buffalo on a couple of other issues (iPhone streaming does not work despite what it says on the box and does not support my 1.5TB iOmega ext HDD) I kept the Quad. I bought it from DABS, a reputable UK retailer for around £300. Imagine my delight when I bought a Mac 3 months ago. I used the TimeCapsule support offered my the Quad. I started using it. Lion tightened up the security. The NAS stopped working. Now, I've worked in and around the software industry for many years and fully accept that its unfair to expect a company to continue supporting a product for a long time (although, in the telecoms industry, we frequently find ourselves adding features to 15 or 20 year old hardware!). My Quad is still for sale in DABS with more stock coming so I'd hardly say the Quad is obsolete. I have asked for, and been given specific advice from Buffalo on whether or not a fix would be fourth-coming for my Quad. They said no.

So you will find my sale of obsolete hardware on eBay.

Isn't there some EU directive that states that a company selling products into the EU has to provide support for that product for 7 years after the last one was sold?

Anyway, needless to say, I will never buy a Buffalo product again and I will actively discourage anyone else doing likewise.

I have a Linkstation Mini, LS-WS1.0GL/R1. Of course time machine is not working anymore with lion.

Will this device get a firmware update like the LS-WSXL mini version or not?

The device is just 9 month old, the model is still on sale @ e.g. amazon. If Buffalo leaves this device unsupported after such a short time frame and forces me to buy a time capsule this will for sure be the last Buffalo device I have ever bought.

LS-WX2.0TL/R1

as a shared drive on my network for iver a year. It has 700GB of photos on it from around the world and another 700GB of movies. I use it daily ...or I used it daily... Is there a driver yet?  I had to do a unix hack to allow at least one of my machines to access my data..

I'm sure you unterday this issue. I was leary of getting a buffalo fro use with macs but it has worked well for the past year or so... but I need a real driver..the hack reduces security and I need something real.

Atbarfkn & martl007?,

You no longer need to add the MAC address, Just enable Time Machine, Choose which share or directory you want to save to, and then your Mac will automatically find it.  It is super easy and super fast.  The reason you no longer have to enter the Mac address is because we have enabled multiple system support, meaning you can now backup multiple macs to the LinkStation.

Jay, it sounds like I am going to have to wait until sometime in August for any update for firmware for my particular unit, Terasataion Live HS-DH-TGL/R5?, as I think the firmware for my unit now is 2.14?? Is this correct on waiting?

Thanks

Kbrown,

That is correct. As I said in the other thread, we do not release beta firmware on our TeraStation because these are business grade units and as such their firmware gets extensive testing.?

Jay --

Thank you for explaining why the Mac Information field disappeared in v1.53b.  I know you guys are working as hard as you can, and I guess when your team has a chance to catch their breath they will update the manuals.

Thanks again.

Jay, thanks for helping us. When will you move from beta to a normal production release. I can't download the beta. Just don't understand how.

Manuals would be updated after the beta goes to production release status - it has to finish going through QA first.

Sorry for the delay.

Jay,

Do you know if the firmware for the HDLAN250 unit will be released?  I'm not even using it for Timemachine but I have an iTunes file on it.  My problem is that it's not even showing up in the finder.  All I want is for it to be accessible, I don't need it for backup purposes.  Any ideas?

Thanks.

: Re: Mac OS 10.7 (Lion) can't connect with LinkStation (LS-WX2.0TL/R1)
: jed100n August 02, 2011, 10:06:08 AM

I have a Linkstation Pro LS-XHL 2TB.

I upgraded the firmware to 1.53 beta at the weekend and it seemed to go smoothly enough. When it finished I could indeed performa Timemachine backups with Lion.

Alongside this though (and this has never happened before), I am having to completely power-cycle the NAS pretty much on a daily basis as it stops responding to the Lion OS and asks to be dismounted.

When I turn the black switch at the back of the NAS to the bottom of the three available positions, it never actually powers the NAS down gracefully. I have to reconnect the power cable everytime to get the NAS back up and running again.

: Re: Mac OS 10.7 (Lion) can't connect with LinkStation (LS-WX2.0TL/R1)
: 2020hindsight August 02, 2011, 11:44:14 AM

Can we please have a statement of direction for the drives that are not mentioned in the list.  I urgently need to understand whether my LS-WTGL 2tb drive is going to work with Lion in the short term because

a) Although I don't use it for TimeMachine (thankfully), it has primary backups of all of my movies and TV episodes and secondary backups of personal documents, applications and backups of complex items such as my Parallels VMs. Currently a core part of my backup strategy is inaccessible - both up update AND recover from if I need to. Having a non-working backup is unacceptable in a business and it's unacceptable in a home consumer environment.

b) That drive is currently running at 93% utilisation and I have to make a decision very shortly as to where I go from here. Should I simply buy an additional Linkstation (which would be preferable); should I buy another vendor's product, or should I bite the bullet and replace my Linkstation with something else.

I'm really disappointed with the fact that Buffalo has been so tardy in announcing to customers at large that their products don't work with Lion; I'm amazed that a vendor could have had so much warning to check compatability and yet still be incompatible and, to be honest, I'm amazed at the lack of information coming out of the company. Jay is providing updates - and thank you for that - but where's the constant feedback, where's the detailed schedule, where's the complete list of products that will be supported and those that customers will have to replace ?

Totally agree to post above.  Can we have an update ASAP???

I have an LS-WS1.0TGL/R1 and want to know if I should just sell it and buy something thats supported or if there's a firmware update coming out shortly????

Cheers.

2020 & LSW USER,

I am sorry that you feel that we have not been upfront enough with our communications.  As I have stated in past posts, we have been working on this issue for quite sometime and unforunately with 22 currently shipping products this does take us time. (This is not an excuse, I am just stating the truth.)  As for your drive I believe in the Time Machine thread that is stickied in the Storage forum I answered with this:

http://forums.buffalotech.com/t5/Storage/Mac-OS-10-7-Issues-w-Time-Machine-PLEASE-READ/m-p/74622/message-uid/74622/highlight/true#U74622?

Now I know that I don't have a detailed engineering schedule to share with you and I am sorry about that, but this is all of the information that I can share right now.  If you would like to discuss this further, I invite you to give me a call or drop me an email and I will do my best to assist you.

I also need some information ASAP regarding the LS-QL line. Given that I'm now running Lion across machines, I need a migration plan if there isn't going to be a new release.

I must admit, taking care of NEW products before an existing install base is more than disheartening. Additionally, the simple fact that OSX Lion has been in development for over a year and beta versions have been released to developers for months and nothing was done from a Buffalo perspective will certainly highlight a need for me, should there not be a LS-QL firmware update to look at other manufacturers.

This is not something that should have been taken lightly.

Jay, I have read all 20 pages of this thread before wasting anyone's time to ask a question. I use a LS-WX2.0TL? for our business as the primary LAN Server. We don't do backup with Time Machine or anything else like that with it. In fact all my users are PC users except one MAC user who just updated his MAC this week to Lion. So naturally he can NOT access the NAS. Unfortunately he is our primary Graphic Artist so he can't upload artwork so that everyone else in the business can see it and he can't downloaded other documents from the rest of the staff.

I noticed some work-arounds for getting Time Machine to work for some folks, but since I don't really care about Time Machine (which seems to be the prevailing concern in this thread), can you tell me if there is anything else (another work-around) that I can use so the NAS can be shared with this user or if you know if there will be a fix that will take care of this in the near future.

This isn't just personal use, this is significantly impacting the ability of our business to function!!!!!!

Thanks Jay for anything you can tell me.

Thanks for pointing out this document.  I just want to say to Buffalo Technology that the LS-QL was the second Buffalo Technology storage device I've purchased and if a firmware patch is not offered for this storage device (and very soon) it will be the last product ever that I purchase from Buffalo!

I first posted on 24th of July with no positive reactions from Buffalo so far.

With the given Time Machine issue I will definitely sell my Linkstation Quad LS-QL and join the Synology or Qnap community. Just have a look at their support forum. Looks like the way it should be.

Hi,

I have already filed a complain to Buffalo's complaints department at?  helpdeskcare@buffalo-technology.com??.
No answer yet, but addition to http://www.buffalo-asia.com/support/macosxlion/index.html? ? about not supporting LS-QL has  has been appeared in less than 24h ago?
If Buffalo will continue to keep their decision about not supporting  LS_QL series with Lion. I'll file a complain to European Consumer Centre? about Buffalo's support policy.

Hopefully I do not neet to go that far...

I suggest you'll do the same in European and US.

Dear metsa,

Thanks for this information!

My LS-QL is eighteen months old and no longer of any use for me. Buffalo's customer service and support policy is a joke compared to their competitors. If they think that the affected target group is too small to update the firmware of some products they should offer a redemption or a replacement by more recent products.

@Jay Pechek: Any comments on this??

Best regards,

André

Hi aunland

If your LS-QL has been purchased eighteen months ago then it should be covered by Buffalo Technology warranty http://www.buffalo-technology.com/support/warranty?

LS-QL has been left out from  Buffalos sales catlaog just a few months ago. DHCAST128? issue with Lion has been identified way before.

I would say this is quite misleading marketing information...

: aunland August 03, 2011, 02:28:33 PM

Dear All,

Just to give you an idea what's possible and how a competitor is dealing with this issue - especially for older products < 2007:

"Your feedback is invaluable to us because only by knowing what you think and need can we tailor our customer services to best meet your requirements. That is the simple belief Synology holds.?

As you may already know that the AFP & Time Machine in the latest Mac OS X 10.7 Lion does not support 3rd-party NAS with old version of Netatalk, which means you can no longer use a Synology DiskStation as a backup device for use with Apple's Time Machine, or as a dedicated AFP file server. Fortunately, these issues have already been addressed in our DiskStation Manager (DSM) 3.2 beta which will work with all existing Synology DiskStations released in 2008 or later.

Although Synology DiskStations released in 2007 and before are already out of DSM upgrade service, however we have came to a decision that we will release a special DSM version for Synology x07-series DiskStations, specifically addressing the incompatibility issue with AFP & Time Machine in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion. This will ensure our customers continue to enjoy their Synology DiskStations and not being punished by simply upgrading their Mac OS X. It is now scheduled to be available for free download around mid-August. Please stay tuned.

For users who have already encountered these issues, it is suggested to use Samba file transfer service as the temporarily solution."

In this case the NAS will become useless to me.

I agree,

We should be supplied with replacement hardware as this appears to be a line that is being disconnected. I'm still within the 12 month warranty period, and if there is no fix for Lion, will encourage all small business IT folks that I know to stay away from Buffalo. This is unacceptable.

I have a Tera Station 1 TB Home Server. I saw where a NasNavigator 2 update was released (v 2.40).  The note stated that it would fix the problem of my mac not recognizing my drive.  Unfortuneatly, when I downloaded it and tried to run it I recieved the error messge that the type of server that I am trying to connect to is not supported.  Will there be a fix for this or amy I doing something wrong?

Any news ? Any updates ? Any feedback ?

Things have gone incredibly quiet, and meanwhile there's still no news on when fixes will be available for a number of different drives, including my LS-WTGL.

Are you still expecting us to wait until late August/September for fixes ? Are we going to get a fix ? Is there a schedule for the fixes for the unnamed drives ?

: Re: Mac OS 10.7 (Lion) can't connect with LinkStation (LS-WX2.0TL/R1)

I think those who have the old Quad and can't get Lion to work should consider upgrading to Buffalo's latest hardware anyway. I've been running a Linkstation Quad since early 2009 and its been very reliable, however its slow as a dog. I got a Linkstation Pro Duo QVL on sale for about USD120 (without drives) and it is so much faster than the Quad, its not funny. In fact, users are saying that its as fast as their local hard drives. Furthermore, 2TB drives are dirt cheap now.

Basically there has been a huge jump in price/performance for Buffalo products with the hardware released in the last 6 months or so, while prices have dropped. I did look at QNAP/Synology, but they are more than twice the price. What to do with the Quad? I'm using it as a backup for the Pro Duo. I schedule a NAS-NAS backup once a week and the Quad just wakes up automatically for that day. Otherwise it sleeps for 6 days a week.....

I ordered a Synology 211+ from Amazon and just received it today together with two 2TB hdd's. Believe my, you need to see the GUI and you need to experience the speed of this great device. As soon as the data has been copied I will erase the Quad's four hdd's and sell it at ebay.

Bug Buffalo to fix this! Found this: http://begandbug.com/2011/08/15/buffalo-fix-your-products-to-be-mac-os-x-lion-compatible/?

So I assume the lack of an answer regarding the LS-WSGL/R1's possibility of receiving a firmware upgrade to be compatible with Lion's TimeMachine is the answer? This product has served me well and unfortunate I have to look for something else, however that's life with technology!

Has anyone downloaded the Lion update (released today) to see if it addresses any of our harddrive issues?

Yup, I updated to 10.7.1....no luck still get the error  message when trying to access via afp...which ultimately is the same problem Time Machine has....

So, I never could get the beta to load. STILL waiting on the load to be tested by Buffalo and formally released to us.

You will have to download the update manually if your unit cannot see the update through the interface.

Ah, there is the fun...I have had no luck downloading the beta either. Wondering, as the customer, why I HAVE to do it manually. The last update came thru automatically.

Can anyone provide a detailed manual install process for dummies? Or should us dummies not be buying the product?

And tell me, why ( the customer) should. Have to go through the convoluted download process to solve Buffalo's problem?

Buffalo didn't fix the bug when they had time and this is their fault but you can't blame them because you don't know how to download a file a run the updater...

I have tried to download the update to my LS-WX4.0TL/R1-EU?. First I set it to download and install but I got some message about not being able to transfer the file. I waited a little while and started the process again. Still via the interface. Now it jumped directly to "Progress: Updating of the firmware has started.?" and it has stayed there for like 6 hours.

What can/should I do?

Very strange. All of a sudden, one of my backups from my MacBook Pro to one shared folder on my LS-WTGL (LS-WTGL/R1-V3 F/W 3.09)

?started working today. The others (to a different shared folder) still fail with the usual message. NB these are my scheduled Intego backups, and not Time Machine. The only change  as far as I'm aware is the OSX 10.7.1 upgrade, tho' why this should make a difference and why it should make a difference to one shared folder only I've no idea.

I decided to bit the bullet - initialise the entire Linkstation and re-set up the two logical disks from scratch.

Lo and behold it now appears to work. So far I've backed up around 150gig, and appear to be able to read/write at will.

I've already moved half of my backups off the LS to another vendor's product. I'll keep testing with the Linkstation and if it proves reliable will continue to use it.

But Buffalo's support has been non-existant; Buffalo has been completely behind the curve on this one as far as I'm concerned not testing their products under Lion to make sure they work; not informing customers if products didn't work, not keeping customers up to date as to the status of any fixes etc etc.

I've no idea whether my disk will continue to work - certainly Buffalo haven't given me any confidence. And I certainly will not be buying a Buffalo product when I need to replace something.

The whole sorry affair has been a prime example of how to lose customers I'm afraid.

I've no idea whether anyone else's disk will start to work, or whether re-initialising will work for those doing non-Time Machine backups. It might be worth a try.

Buffalo, as developers, had over half a year time to review the issues with Lion. They chose to do NOTHING until the big crash. After the crash they acted as if they knew nothing about the issue until the release of Lion.

They don't even do software updates for two-year-old products, which is VERY weak. The advertised time machine function has never worked right out of the box. The network speed of the linkstation is abysmal. It is loud, needs a lot of power and the user interfaces are just bad. They have iPhone support only for newer versions, but they do not declare it properly.

I'm very sorry to have invested in a company that has absolutely no idea what customer satisfaction means. I bought a time capsule now, like I should have from the start. And guess what: Everything just works.

A very unsatisfied and quite angry ex-customer

I just updated two mac's on my netowork to Lion 10.7 and updated the firmware of my LS-XH2.0TL (1.54) and updated my NASNavidator2(2.5) software for the MAC's and I still can not connect to the NAS.   I can see the NAS server in the Navigator (with correct IP address) but when I try to connect to a folder  I get an ERROR "You do not have permission to access this server".   I can log in through the web interface and change settings, but I can not log into the server using the Navigator.

I can run windows7 using parallels on the MAC and use the NasNavigator software(1.54) for windows and it still will not connect to the server and has the same error.

What Options do I have and is there no fix at this time per the posts?

I've told all my mates NEVER to buy a Buffalo NAS.

I just love the fact that all you Apple fan boys are complaining to Buffalo that Apple changed the AFP protocol completely and now NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING, now works with AFP. Here's the thing. If you don't like how long Buffalo is taking to put out a firmware update to make their stuff work then try and go out and find another raided system that will work with Lion's version with AFP. Once you can't find anything but Apples own stuff then you come back in here and apologize to these nice people at Buffalo as I'm sure they are working to get this updated. But see you 5% of people use this device are Mac people the rest of the world it still works for. So don't really expect them to jump through hoops just for the almighty Apple because the Steve Jobs crew decided to make a change that breaks absolutely everything.

And before you try to go off on me I do own 3 Macs. I just understand how the world works and know that in due time there will be a fix for this. The same thing happened in the Windows world when 7 came out. All kinds of stuff stopped working correctly and it just took some time to get everyone on the same page.

So in closing what I'm say to Buffalo is thanks for all your hard work and I'm sure that you have something coming that will fix this. It's people like this supersheep dude that puts a bad taste in my mouth as an Apple user. Of course another Apple product is going to work, it's made by the same company and if you don't see the big picture here then you are a fool yourself. This is how Apple gets you to buy their products. Make a change that will make you go out a buy another Apple product because its the only thing that works. If you showed a little more patience then you wouldn't be lining Steve's pockets with your money. But as I called you in the beginning you fan boys just gotta have your Apple products so good luck with that.

OH and BTW just change your protocol to smb:// sure it takes longer but why are you sitting there watching a time machine back up run? Do it in the off hours instead.

Hi guys.  I have been having the same problem since I updated to Lion yesterday.  Luckily, from reading all of the posts (mostly complaining), I started doing a little more searching, and it appears that Aaron Thorne is pretty knowledgeable and has come up with the solution.     His terminal command sequence worked like a champ for me, and I'm back in business.

Quote from Aaron:

"

If you are lucky enough to be using OS X Lion Developer Preview and you have a NAS drive, you will most likely come across a problem trying to connect to it.

Ok the issue is that i tried to access my Buffalo LinkStation over AFP with OS X LION Beta 1 and got a error message like this one above. I couldn’t login with a registered user on my Buffalo LinkStation. The guest account worked fine but no chance with a registered one.

So i found a solution and explanation at the Apple Developer Forum. Apple disables support for the “DHCAST128? in OS X 10.7 LION , which is commonly used by NAS boxes. Apple thinks is it insufficiently secure. So all the Vendors must work with Apple for Lion compatibility.

To turn on “DHCAST128? support please do the following: "

The rest can be seen here...

http://blog.digidex.co.uk/2011/06/18/os-x-lion-connection-error-with-afp-and-workaround/?

I am using a Buffalo Linkstations LS-WTGL/R1-V3 F/W 3.09

I suggest that you cut and paste the commands rather than type them.  Also, make sure you reboot each time he tells you to.

Happy Buffalo NAS fixing with NO FIRMWARE UPGRADE REQUIRED!!!!!!

I bought the  LinkStation™ Quad - LS-QL/R5? less than a year ago, specifically for Time Machine. No firmware upgrade is indicated on the pdf. It's not acceptable. I am one of several people to mention this model in this thread without adequate response.

Does this fall under the warranty? I bought mine within the EU, and since it is not fit for purpose, there might be a statutory right to return. I will check.

Any news from anyone else is very welcome.

Given Buffalo's complete complancy and utter lack of customer support on this issue, I'm trying to take that resolution into my own hands.  Has anyone tried to hack an LS-QL R5 on their own?  I'm not a Linux guru, but was able to telnet into the device (I'm thinking warranty doesn't matter much at this point:).  Based on what I've read, the fix would involve upgrading the box to current version of netatalk that supports DHX2 (I believe this is netatalk 2.2).  Haven't been able to figure out how to accomplish this on my own, but wondering if anyoneone on the forum with stron linux skills has attempted it?

Buffalo - you can definitely add me to the list of customer's you've lost as well, and I have already begun to tell others to steer clear of your brand due to this event (in hindsight, you should determine that fixing the issue would have cost you a lot less...).

TimS: I have upgraded my linkstation mini to netatalk 2.2. I assume the steps are the same for your model in principle. I don't have time to write down detailed instructions but it is not too complicated:

  1. open the device for telnet with acpcommander
  2. google for "optware". It is a addon to a couple of ARM-based linux devices like the linkstation. It allows you to install extension packages with the ipkg command and it has precompiled binaries for i.e netatalk. There are a couple of guides on the net that explain how to bootstrap optware on a linkstation. It is easy.
  3. use ipkg to install netatalk and avahi (that is a bonjour package)
  4. disable the original netatalk and bonjour of the linkstation (remove bootstrap scripts in /etc/init.rd)
  5. create your own startsripts for the new netatalk and avahi in /opt/etc/init.rd
  6. configure netatalk and avahi, there are guides for this on the net
  7. at the  end I had to replace the precompiled authentication modules for netatalk with the linkstation original ones, because they did not access the same user database and I could not authenticate at all, only as anonymous. Therefore I still cannot run DHX2, but you do not need it, you can change a lion setting to allow the old authentication modules (search Apples support documents).
  8. Now time machine works again and the rest of the linkstation works as before (WOL, web interface)

Took me 3 evenings. Good luck!

Hi ,

I recently upgraded to LION and amoungst other things I lost my connection to my LINKSTATION

After reading many blogs I got a temporary solution - thought it best to share with everyone

goto APPLE FINDER

GO

CONNECT TO SERVER

OR {apple} K

type in....

smb://user:password@server/share

The share should mount in finder as per normal

Best of luck

Thankfully I had previously used smb to direct connect via ethernet cable to a Windows Vista machine to copy files over to my new MacBook Pro, so I thought I'd try smb://linkstation_name where linkstation_name is the name I configured for the device when I set it up.  It prompted me for the volume I wanted to connect and as soon as I picked a volume it mounted right up with no problems.  Now on to Time Machine, hopefully it will be that simple.

Have done this on a linkstation live LS-CHL F/W 1.02. Works well and tooks me 1 hour. My linkstations has allready been boostraped. There is a instruction at http://forum.buffalo.nas-central.org/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=23777 and http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/netatalk2-2-on-whitelight

Because this is not an easy step by step solution one should have no fear about commandline. And you need to add the new afpd to the optware startscript. With the new afpd (netatalk 2.2) the login authentication needs significiant more time (up to a minute)
