Can I put 2TB drives in my Linkstation Pro Duo
« on: December 14, 2009, 03:44:43 PM »

I currently have 1.0 TB LS-W1.0TGL/R1 V3. The KB article http://www.buffalotech.com/knowledgebase/users/kb.php?id=10233&category_id=0&sid2= puts 1TB limit on the size of the drives. My question is - if I put 2TB drives in there - what is going to happen? The possible scenarios come to my mind:

- Linkstation won't recognize drives

- Linkstation will recognize drives as of size of 1TB

- Linkstation will recognize drives as of size of 2TB, but will corrupt the data written...

Would appreciate your input here.  Thanks

Hi,

You can put in two 2TB hdds inside.

Just make sure the 2tb hdds do not have any partitions.

Once put up, run tftp boot.

Then update firmware of the LS-WTGL.

Thanks tanjl. Do you know if there is any restrictions on the specs of the drives? 5400 RPM vs 7200 RPM, for example... I am looking to buy Hitachi Deskstar HD32000 IDK/7K. They are 7200RPM. I wonder if 7200RPM will be hotter than 5400RPM (which are currently installed from factory, I believe), which could lead to whole unit overheat.

I'm currently using a 2tb 7200rpm WD Black series x 2 so its 4tb.

So far so good...

regarding overheating, i cannot answer you as I leave my set in an air-condiitoned environment 24/7.

But so far, i've not had any problems regarding over-heating for this model as yet..

sorry to piggyback on this thread, but i have a dumb question. am i safe to assume that if two 2tb hard drives work in the linkstation pro duo, that two 1.5tb hard drives will also work?  i want to put two of the folowing drives in there:

Western Digital Caviar Green (WD15EADS) 1500GB (1.5TB) SATA 3 Gb/s 32MB

thanks!

I would assume they would work.

Trying to install two 1TB WD Green drives into my Linkstation.

Linkstation is not getting an IP address or being detected by NAS Nav..

Any input would be appreciated.

Mate, I've just tried two 1.5TB WD Green drives, and it was a no-go for me.  My Pro Duo model is a Japanese one off ebay, but with a 3.10 version firmware.  When I went to update the firmware I received a "ACP_STATE_FAILURE" message right at the very beginning, and got no further.  Initially one of the drives had a NTFS partition on it, but after reading one of the messages above about having no partitions on the drives, I wiped that partition out and tried again.  But I still got the same error message.  So me thinks they aren't supported.

As a reminder, upgrading the drives WILL void the warranty on these units...
