: WZR-HP-AG300H - Firmware updates? Which, where, how?
: DBott April 29, 2011, 11:11:20 AM

Hello...

Model = WZR-HP-AG300H

New to Buffalo routers and also to new to dd-wrt.  Not new to routers really, or even how to update them.  However, I am very lost with Buffalo.

Not only is my model not listed on Buffalo's webite support area in the product drop down box, I can not find any reference to it for updates on the Buffalo website.  Kind of pondering really.

I did come across this digging though the forums...

ftp://dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2011/04-09-11-r16785/buffalo_wzr-hp-ag300h/

...while searching around.  Is this the CURRENT lease?  If so, why it is not mentioned anywhere?  It is the only place I seem to have been able to find any firmware for this router.  Not even on the Buffalo site.

If this an offiical Buffalo relase?  Who is BrainSlayer for example?

So, then then leads me to what file do I use?  Their are TWO in the download area.  Both the same file size, but different names.  Also...no release notes.

Also, the files are .BIN files.  Yet on the CD that came with the WZR-HP-AG300H the file firmware extention is different.

Can you see why maybe someone new would be totally lost?  :)

Their is also no information that I could find on Buffalo's site on the propoer way to upgrafe the firmware.  I know back it up first, but if I install one of these bin files, will the current settings be retained or does it wipe it?  Again, I ask for their is NO INFO on revsions or what is needed to be done.  VERY lacking in any type of documentaion.

Reason I am looking for new firmware...Well this one is dated 12/17/10.  (DD-WRT v24SP2-MULTI (12/17/10) std)  And seems to make been made for a differnt model that I found in the 2010 download area but again this model is not listed in their.  (BTW..These model numnbers really are poor as they are way to close to each other.)  But the reason I am looking to update....

I am looking for the current firmware because I also seem to be plagued with the wireless just going away (As I have read also happen with the model that has close the the same model number).  Both 2.4ghz and 5ghz just will stop on the router.  I need to reboot the router to get it back.  It can take 2 or 3 days for it to occure, but it does.  Before this happens, I usually see a large # of TX erros start to occur.    As such, I came looking for new firmware incase this has been resolved.

Side note...Even on the dd.wrt site in the router database, this model is not even listed for files or help.  ?????

So...Any help or guidence would be appreacated.

Thank you.

David

That site is not from buffalo but from DDWRT. Those are two different entities. This unit should be added to the downloads list very soon so you can download the firmware. Is QoS enabled for you? You might want to try and disable it to see if it resolves the wireless issues.

: Re: WZR-HP-AG300H - Firmware updates? Which, where, how?
: DBott April 29, 2011, 03:05:11 PM

Hello...

Thank you kindly for the reply.

I do know that they are two differnt sites, however, Buffalo is using that firmware as I did find the firmware that came on the WZR-HP-AG300H on that site but it seems it is for a slight differnt model numner. (Yet the hardware is clearly differnt being dual band.)  It is not even listed here.  Heck, my model is not even listed.

It is just so confusing.  Where do I go for support and firmware?  I ask for their is NO instrustion or Wiki here on how to do things with the router.  Yet their is on the DD-WRT site.  I had to read on the DD-WRT site how to setup my router to be used as a GUEST access and that I needed to make a bridge and add in code to make it all work.  Yet the Buffalo states that it has a guest mode, yet it does not really have a mode for it.  See how it can be very confusing on who is actually running what?   It is DD-WRT firmware yes?  And DD-WRT has one listed in the location mentioned. So which is it?  Is it not actually for the WZR-HP-AG300H even though it is the only place I have found with something listed for this model.

Not even have the model listed on the site of the Manufacturer for support, help, firmeware, etc at all is...well...outragious.

In any case, the issue I have seems was carried over from other units and will of couse make for a return of the 3 units I purchased.  I see referneced of this for other models with notes about it being not resolved or not really even being looked into.  Only things I find are from users who have made scripts etc to ping a wireless device and if not found, restart the wireless services.  Reguarless, the network still goes down for at least over a minuite knocking things off line.  This clearly is not accetable. Why is not Buffalo all over this?

I am using the router just as an Access Point.  (Not that that matters.  The wireless radios just go away.  POOF.)

In any case QoS is DISABLED. So not an issue nor was that ever mentioned in any of the threads I have read on the issue. So pondering.

So, No support info for Buffalo's Flagship Router.  Not even downloadable firmeware from the site.  I really am wondering about my choice and this is my first expereice with a Buffalo product.

Thank you again for the reply.  But sorry to say it really did not help answer the questions.

David

I have this model. Didn't you use the CD that came with the unit? I've loaded the Buffalo (non-DD-WRT) firmware and it's fine.

I was told that Buffalo will post updates, etc. on their website about one month after the product is available. Since that's about now, I'm checking the site regularly. But, if they don't have solutions to open issues yet, I guess we just have to wait.

Nevertheless, I have not complaints but I fo have a rather simple application.

The standard "User Friendly" firmware does not offer the options needed. (Like being able to custom setup GUEST access.)  Seeing it come defaulted with the WW-DRT firmware, I would expect this is the one to be more widely used.

I was just reading through the user friendly firmware manual (it's on the CD)  and they talk about setting up a guest account in the User Management  section in chapter 4 page 71.

OOPS that was the manual for the  WZR-HP-G300nh

I'm sorry abotu the DBott, I'm not sure why it has not been added to the downloads list yet. The firmware is written by DDWRT for buffalo, so most of their walk throughs will work on our firmware. Setting up a guest network is as follows.

Enable a virtual network.

Enable AP isolation on that network

If you want to create a dhcp server and add it to that virtual ap and unbridge it from the main dhcp server.

Use the code you got from DDWRT to seperate the network.

I'm sorry you have not had much luck with the router. As for the wireless drop outs, what channel are you using? Have you tried the friendly firmware that came on the disk to see if this resolved the issue?

: Re: WZR-HP-AG300H - Firmware updates? Which, where, how?
: mookie May 06, 2011, 03:54:11 PM

You can set up multiple SSIDs in the User Friendly firmware for WZR-HP-AG300H, which I just bought.  I use one of them as guest.

: Re: WZR-HP-AG300H - Firmware updates? Which, where, how?
: Jotin May 06, 2011, 03:56:10 PM

Mookie, yeah thats true but its not completely seperate. You can still see other devices on the network wich is basically what a real guest network cannot do. Creating a guest network the way I explained will have it so that the guest cannot see any resources on the network, whether they be other wireless guests or any wired devices on the LAN.

: Re: WZR-HP-AG300H - Firmware updates? Which, where, how?
: DBott May 06, 2011, 06:05:20 PM

Thanks Jotin for the reply.

However, as mentioned, this is running as an AP and not a rull router with a internet WAN connection.  So, well, their is much more to it as you know.

I went to the DD-WRT site for, well , that is where the firmware is from.  And, well, that is where I found information on the firmware and the settings. I am just still amazed on the lack for ANYTHING for this product in regards to support on Buffalo's own site.  Not even current firmware!!!!!  The one that comes with it is surely not current anymore as I provided a link to what I THINK is the current firmware.  Yet, no one can seem to tell me if it is or not.   Hello...Buffalo?????

BTW...Here is how you set up a true guest network running in AP mode...

: Re: WZR-HP-AG300H - Firmware updates? Which, where, how?
: buddee May 06, 2011, 08:53:18 PM

You can use community builds of dd-wrt for your unit as you please, the main reason that there is no buffalo professional dd-wrt available at their website for downloads is because the buffalo dd-wrt builds are alpha builds. The community dd-wrt builds are all beta test builds, but the alpha buffalo dd-wrt build is still based on beta code, thats why there is build numbers. I believe your unit comes with the latest alpha dd-wrt build on the CD enclosed with the router, thus no need for download on buffalo's site.

Also, as you have already found out, the dd-wrt community is where you need to study info from because buffalo's site has no info like dd-wrt's community wiki's and forums. I should know, i helped contribute a good lot of that info :)

: Re: WZR-HP-AG300H - Firmware updates? Which, where, how?
: DBott May 06, 2011, 09:36:31 PM

Thanks buddee.

I guess my point is that Buffalo does not have ANYTHING related to what I think is their flagship wireless router on the site.  Nor do they seem to try to help with issues that are brought up. (Like the dropped WiFi radios that need to be restarted.)  That one issue for example has been around for such a time that I have found 2 different checkers, made my members of dd-wrt, that more or less restart the services that should not have gone down in the first place.  Why is not Buffalo addressing this I guess is a good question to ask.  I should not have to run a cron job on my AP looking to see if it can ping a wifi device and if not, restart the interfaces.  This is a major disruption in service as you would likely know. :)

I get bursts of bad transmissions, followed by hours of no issues at all.  I have tried different channels and I am sure to keep at least a 4 channel separation.  One thing I can not even find any info on is what is the antenna config in this thing.  A tech on the phone said its a 2+2 which does not make much sense seeing he then said, and I have read in the dd-wrt wiki's that I should set 1-2 and 1-2-3.  How can that be seeing it does not seem to have 3 antennas.  I have tried different things to no avail.  Very pondering.

As such my concern when I came to this site looking for not only current firmware, but some help with their top product.  Such a shame it is not even listed anywhere expect to read the sales info on it.

I guess I am just frustrated. Maybe you would be also with numbers like this...

Received (RX) 103638429 OK, no error

Transmitted (TX) 50993131 OK, 4705234 errors
The TX errors take off at some point and then stops.  I have yet to find the source of the interference but it happens on any channel.  I can not even seem to be able to pin it down to one wireless device.  It would be helpful if you could see the RX and TX errors per connected device.  After all, if the system knows it had an TX error, it knows to what WiFi MAC address had the error.   This could be very helpful to find out if it is may be ONE wireless device having an issue, or if you see it on all at the same time.  Thus interference.
Thanks for the help given in the wiki.

Hello Buffalo???  Are you going to release updated Firmware for your new Flagship router?

: Re: WZR-HP-AG300H - Firmware updates? Which, where, how?
: drmemory May 17, 2011, 10:41:11 AM

the latest Buffalo DDWRT FW is 15940 on the Buffalotech USA download site.

: Re: WZR-HP-AG300H - Firmware updates? Which, where, how?
: DBott May 17, 2011, 10:54:24 AM

Like I said...  DD-WRT v24SP2-MULTI (12/17/10) std - build 15940  IS THE SAME VERSION THAT THE UNIT SHIPPED WITH.  It has not been touched from December yet has issues like the wireless radio drop out.

Thanks for the reply, but it was far from needed other than proving my point.

(And yes, it is on the site NOW after me having to point out it was missing.  Yet still no update from the origional release.)

Buffalo guys,

I really hate to pile on here but I have two of the WZR-HP-AG300H which I think are very good routers so far except for this wifi dropout issue.

Maybe just a short update on where you are at on this issue would satisfy us users curiosity that you at least are "taking it seriously." I dumped D-Link to join the Buffalo crowd but unfortunately I am back to using my D-Link DIR-855 because wifi on the WZR-HP-AG300H just doesnt stay up long enough to be relied on.

I apologize if this adds some undue pressure but I think we are all believers in Buffalo and know that this is not easy to fix, but just a small update as to how the issue is progesssing in the Dev teams might be in order?

My thanks to all of you in advance.

Cheers!

We take FW seriously and have to wait for each new FW from Japan. We don't get a timetable from them in regards to when the next FW is ready for BT USA to conduct QA on each new FW.

We are coming up now on 6 months that this firmware has NOT been updated for this model.  It has not been updated from the release!

I'd rather have stable firmware rather than fast firmware so thank you for the recent release of DDWRT.

: DBott May 24, 2011, 07:08:27 PM

"I'd rather have stable firmware rather than fast firmware so thank you for the recent release of DDWRT."

Huh?  What?  What recent release?  Their has not been a new release for this model from the time the model came out.  That 2011-05-13 date on the Buffalo download page is the date they finely REMEMBERED that it was not even listed on their site.  That date is the date it was posted to their site when in fact it is the same December released firmware the unit ships with.

As it has been clearly started, it is not stable.  That is, unless you consider your wireless radios just turning off for no reason.

Really?  Come on now.

: Re: WZR-HP-AG300H - Firmware updates? Which, where, how?

To share my frustration.

I Just went to http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Buffalo_WZR-HP-G300NH (last modified 7 June 2011). Following instructions from that page I next went to http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database and identified that

BuffaloTech WZR-HP-AG300H factory firmware (DD-WRT v24SP2-MULTI (03/21/11) std ) is the latest firmare available for the excellent wireless router that keeps dropping off it's wireless part, wifi dropout. The dd-wrt site states that lates support firmware fo the router is V24preSP2 [BETA] Build 14896, which is the origin of the factory firmware as stated earlier in this thread. So, no luck for the wireless dropout.

Noticed that there dd-wrt page has detailed howto instructions to help you to fix WiFi Dropout and also an alternate method for it.  Why would I want to reset wireless connection (manually or automatically via script)?  I want to stay connected.

I promised to get my wlan working today. It's gonna be either BuffaloTech or some other vendor here at the end of the day.

D'oh!

And to think...STILL TO THIS DAY, Buffalo has remainded quite on this.  This is listed as their FLAGSHIP ROUTER!  Yet it seems to have more issues than I think they know what to do with.

COME ON BUFFALO...NOT ONLY TAKE CARE OF YOUR PRODUCTS...BUT YOUR CUSTOMERS!

: Re: WZR-HP-AG300H - Firmware updates? Which, where, how?
: insomnic January 03, 2012, 11:58:59 AM

I've switched to using Gargoyle: http://www.gargoyle-router.com/

Works great and I've had zero issues. It's a DDWRT front end with a basic gui front end but has quite a few advanced features as well if you want to use them (including TOR and openNIC support as well as an extensive reporting tools and QOS options).

Buffalo will never get any business from me or the company I work for ever again because of how this router release and maintenance was handled. As been said... this was their flagship router and their handling of it shows exactly what kind of company they have become. I equate them with Belkin now... just out to scam customers who aren't tech savvy enough to know they are being ripped off.

Gargoyle interface is a front end for the excellent OpenWrt Kamikaze firmware.  OpenWRT is developing firmware for this router and they have a trunk that works but I don't link their GUI so i am waiting for the Kamikaze firmware.

"Always check OpenWRT for hardware support.
Looks like its only supported in newest trunk testing
Which means currently, no Gargoyle image will support the AG300H"

DBott -- Wondering if you have had any luck resolving this issue of the wi-fi drops.  I have the AG300H with the DD-WRT built 16519 (DD-WRT v24SP2-MULTI (03/21/11) std) that came pre-installed with this router.

I stupidly replaced Buffalo 300GH router that had the identical problem, expecting that this "better" model would not be plagued by the same wi-fi drop out issue.  I've had great experience with Buffalo products in the past, but this has completely shaken my brand loyalty.

As you said earlier in this thread, the router isn't even listed in the dd-wrt.com router database.

I'm ready to take this router out back and run it over with my SUV to extract some amount of satisfaction from the miserable hours of time I have wasted trying to get the SSID to stop disappearing.  I posted to http://forums.techguy.org/networking/1039270-buffalo-whr-hp-g300n-wzr.html awhile back.  I'll copy/paste what I said there below in case anyone here can throw me a bone to fix this.

~~~~
I'm an IT pro that manages the network for a small business. I have read through a couple expired threads here on techguy.org where people are experiencing the same issue that I have. Unfortunately, I don't have any resolution, but am instead throwing this out there in case anyone does have a way to resolve this problem.
The problem has occured with both of the AP/Routers that are listed in the subject. This makes me think it is DD-WRT related and not Buffalo related, but that may not be the case.
The problem is simple: the SSID disappears 1 or more times a day. Sometimes it makes it more than a full day, but then disappears again. It is completely intermittent and there doesn't seem to be any logical reason for it.
* Firmware on the WZR-HP-AG300H is DD-WRT v24SP2-MULTI(03/21/11)
* The device is configured as an Access Point, not a router.
* It has a static IP address assigned
* DHCP Server disabled
* SSID Assigned, WPA2 Personal Mixed wireless security, WPA Shared Key assigned.
* The device is located in the middle of the office in a nice cool area where it in not prone to overheating in any way.
* There are no issues with power as printers/fax machines within 10 feet of the device get their power from the same source.
* The office is not located in a high density area. There are only 2 other SSID's in the area that broadcast and are picked up at this location (owned by other individuals or companies in the vicinity of my office).
When the SSID disappears, I can use a web browser to connect to the device (via wired connection), so although SSID is down (and indeed trying to connect to it by name doesn't work either), the physical ethernet port(s) of are "up". So, I connect to the device, login, go to the Wireless, Basic Settings. Make no changes but click "Apply Settings". Bingo, within 10 seconds, SSID is back and wireless users can connect again. Makes no sense. It's like the wireless side of the device just goes to sleep. Alternatively, I have trained the users to just unplug the device and plug it back in, which solves the problem, for a little while.
Although not a reliable workaround, but it helps with reducing the constant reboots, I have gone to the Administration, Keep Alive tab and enabled Schedule Reboot to reboot everyday at 0600 hours.
I experienced this problem with the WHR-HP-G300N and replaced it with the WZR-HP-AG300H and see now that both models suffer from the exact same problem.
Any ideas to fix or thoughts on troubleshooting welcomed.
Hello...
I am sorryto say NO.  This router has to be the WORST one I have ever come across.  It is SO SAD and says A LOT about a company that not only lists this their FLAGSHIP product abut they do not even care to look to fix theit "best product".  I am looking for a better product at this time that...well...WORKS without drops.
At this time all I can do it setup the watchdog to look at 2 wireless IP's.  If they can not be reached, it restart the WiFi radio.   I also find I can last longer if not running in Dual Band mode and stay with only B/G and not use 5Ghz which is why I biught it.
: Re: WZR-HP-AG300H - Firmware updates? Which, where, how?
: szabogi March 01, 2012, 11:25:38 AM
Thanks DBott for the tips on things you've done to make the problem better.
I located the the latest firmware here: http://www.buffalotech.com/support/downloads/ for DD-WRT and the "User Friendly Firmware".  I've just applied this DD-WRT firmware DD-WRT v24SP2-MULTI (11/20/11) std Build 17798 to see if it will make any difference.  I've flashed the G300 previously and it didn't make a lick of difference, so am not anticipating this will resolve the problem.
IF it doesn't, I am going to try the crappy User Friendly Firmware to see if that might solve the SSID disappearance problem.  Read here or somewhere in the DD-WRT user forums that this problem goes away with that firmware.
Also, although I am not inclined to try it, I read in the user forums that a guy used OPENWRT on his Buffalo G300 and the wifi dropout problem went away.
The problem definitely appears to be rooted in DD-WRT, and perhaps specifically when running on the Buffalo products, but I am not sure of that link per se (just guessing as I see a lot of Buffalo complaints with this specific issue, but don't see other product owners complaining about this problem).
: Re: WZR-HP-AG300H - Firmware updates? Which, where, how?
: DBott March 01, 2012, 11:31:57 AM
The issue with the Friendly firmware is you can not setup guest access which is one thing I required.  I am also not sure if it supports Dual mode (2.4Ghz and 5 Ghz) at the same time.  (Not sure, but I thought I recall itdid not.)
: Re: WZR-HP-AG300H - Firmware updates? Which, where, how?
: szabogi March 01, 2012, 11:43:21 AM
Yep, I recall that from your earlier posts which is why I threw the OPENWRT piece in there -- might be something you want to investigate in more depth.  My situation here is a bit simpler -- I just need an AP that works in the most basic of terms (no guest access needed).  I like the sophistication and configurability of DD-WRT, but I may just need to forget about that and switch the the Friendly firmware.
Hi DBolt,
of course dual mode WORKS in firendly firmware.
Better yet, works in 40mhz channels. DD-WRT, in other hand, does not support 40mhz channels (at least until the version 15940), which is a huge problem to me.
Cheers.
: DBott March 16, 2012, 12:56:10 PM
I could not see a Dual Channel option unless it is new in the Friendly version.
However, you also have no Guest Mode with the Friendly version.
Thanks
What bothers me the most that Buffalo tech support is not checking the problems reported on this thread and this is a forum hosted on their website.
The latest dd-wrt firmware 17798 they have posted on the Download section is a pice of s**t.
Is not capable of doing 300Mbps on turbo mode , is doing only 130Mbps.
I've reported the problem here: http://forums.buffalotech.com/t5/Wireless/WZR-HP-AG300H-300Mbps/td-p/95040
But no one from their techincal support is looking in solving this problem, this bothers me the most !!!
An guess what, if you put a Brian Slayer firmware or something else they will void your warranty.
So no support for their **bleep**y firmware to fix it or something but if you try something better they voids your warranty!!
I have now gone to the Brian Slayer current release from March 2012.  I ended up doing this as I was tried of Buffalo NOT SUPPORTING their routers.  The Brian Slayer release is MUCH MUCH better and I can get 19dBm out of it vs 15dBm.
I WILL NEVER PURCHASE A BUFFALO PRODUCT AGAIN BASED ON THEIR LACK OF CONCERN FOR THE CUTOMER.
I know this response is a little delayed; I didn`t know about such a site/thread. Too busy to find usually. Am having problems with Buffallo Wireless Router in 2011 to 2013, dropping connections at random. Didn`t know what was at fault. I went to Internet provider first, tested-checked...sent onwards, they sent me to my laptop provider (possible fault?), Laptop maker tried to find/suggest a fix and then sent me to Microsoft (as net provider said no problem), M/S checked, tried to assist via help connection, then sent back to my Internt provider, we even changed our net provider from ADSL to a Cable company; it still happened, so we tired Buffallo who just told us to pull out the power connections to the Cable box and buffallo wireless box...But that seems more like a BODGE than an actual fix.
Our problems were enhanced because we are also located/living in Japan and cannot read Kanji or cannot get the right tech translation over the phone. BUFFALLO you should think about installing a pre-fault-flash to someones computer as your unit is about to fail so that customers who are not expert can at least have a pop-up messaged indicating where the problem is.
Hundreds of hours of life and money wasted. Its enough to drive a person mad.
