Rebuilding RAid5 Array
« on: March 07, 2024, 03:45:49 PM »
Recently I obltained a Terastation 3400 (4 bay 16tb model). Had some problems initially when I plugged it in (outdated firmware emergency mode etc.) but following on screen prompts let me fix everything pretty easily and I formatted 3 4tb drives and set-up a Raid 5 array with 8tb available storage. The fourth 4tb drive I ordered finally arrived and I formatted it and then added it to the array and it ahows on the disc management screen and also as part of the Array in the RAID management screen however the available storage still shows as 8TB. However, it now states "rebuilding array" when that process is finished should I see my availability go to 12TB or have I done something wrong along the way?

I'm also dealing with this at the moment. I think I've dealt with this before successfully, but I can't recall what I did...I originally had 16TB, expanded to 64...but it's still showing as 16 total. Hmmmm. Hopefully someone will chime in here after a while.

Alright, found another thread that deals with this, and successfully applied their schema. Here's what to do:

Back up any data you don't want to lose externally.
Break the RAID array.
Dismount the last disk (Disk 4 on a 4 disk system).
Open the drive access door - the disk that was just dismounted should have a RED LED.
Physically pull out the sled about an inch. Wait for the RED LED to turn to GREEN.
Push in (reinstall) the drive sled.
In the Terastation Admin screen, under Drives, select the drive you just dismounted (hit that radio button).
Choose REDISCOVER DISK.
Once that completes, select FORMAT DISK.
Once that completes, the unit capacity should show the appropriate increase.
Rebuild the RAID.
Use as normal (re-load data from the backup).

Hope that helps, I'm doing this now for each disk in the array that I enlarged.

Well that sucks, I don't know if I did something wrong or if maybe it would have self corrected after "rebuilding" the array.  Luckily all I had on it was around 500g that I moved to test out streaming to my Zidoo player over SMB. I wiped the aray and re-did it from scratch with all 4 drives. It seems that now the capacity per drive is a little less so the 4th (different brand) may not have had the exact amount of calculated space as the others after formatting so that could have been fouling things up. Anyway the RAID5 was rebuilt and now it is synching (which takes a looooong time) so all should be well.

Yeah, it takes a while. According to the projected time to finish, I have nearly a week during RAID re-sync before the unit is usable. It's a good thing I don't need it urgently!
